BBC America delivers one of the boldest movies for TV all year in Occupation.

It's impossible to think about anything else while the seething complexities of Occupation play out. Still there's time to marvel at the achievement of this drama set against the backdrop of the Iraq war, of a kind unequaled by any other on the subject

These are not stories with happy endings, but "Occupation" is unexpectedly uplifting in its bravery and humanity. Nesbitt, Graham and Brown brilliantly take their characters to hell and back without losing the slender but undeniable essence of who each man is.

Each of these storylines is interesting enough on its own, but the way “Occupation” looks at Iraq through the eyes of non-Americans only enhances the drama.

Ultimately, patience with the movie’s disorientations is rewarded by director Nick Murphy with a larger sense of the emotional ups and downs and ins and outs of fighting a war with no specific goal. And the performances are so breathtaking, they compensate for a lot of the jittery, piecemeal formatting.

The narrative is well imagined and thoughtfully written, but it’s the performances that hold viewers’ attention.

There's been no shortage of drama tied to the fallout from Iraq and the war's lamentable toll. While Occupation adds to that filmography, it doesn't do quite enough to improve it.

Focused on the immediate mess in the streets, the exploitation and violence of the contractors, the rage and carelessness of the militias, and the multiple oppressions on all sides, Occupation does tend to romanticize and accentuate the British losses. That doesn’t seem quite “right,” either.

David H. gave it an8:
Its good but its no Generation Kill. The acting is of course superb and the direction is sound but it comes across very British stage drama than dramatic portrayal of the effects of war. An approach which as I've already said cannot compare to the sheer brilliance and realism from the creators of the Wire.
