It takes a bit of getting used to, as most puzzlers of this kind are, but before long you’re rocking and rolling with it. And your friends and family might not be able to pry it out of your hands until you drop from exhaustion.

A thrillingly-fast paced puzzle game that should appeal to everyone. It provides an enthralling experience, but at a steep price point.

Games Radar (in-house)

There’s definitely room for AAA-level downloadable content on Live, and whether you pay $15 or $30 for Lumines, it remains one of the best games of 2005 and 2006 and a must-play. If you're a puzzle nut, this is manna from heaven.

In relation to the other titles on the Live Arcade, it's a high price, but this is a game that you'll be coming back to months down the line, making it an essential download.

Sadly, Lumines Live's interesting but misplaced focus on microtransactions hurts its value, and thus, kills the very legitimate shot it had at perfection.

Lumines is a great puzzler that puts the other old and tired puzzle games on XBL Arcade to shame.

IC-Games

The best Arcade game currently [10/19/06] available for download. It’s still good value; even if it’s one of the highest priced Xbox Live arcade out there, and with the additional content planned, it’ll be a while before you drain all the enjoyment out of this one.

Lumines Live is expensive, and isn’t without its problems, but it’s still one of the best things you’ll play on Live Arcade.

Game Over Online

While the microtransaction and digital distribution models are in their infancy and still need some time for the market to straighten them out, the actions taken by the likes of EA (for charging money for uniforms, stadiums, and cheats in their sports games, all which are usually free) and now the makers of Lumines cannot be tolerated.

You might want to resist, and you might mind coughing up the extra change, but you're bound to be hopelessly and happily addicted to what is truly a great puzzler. [Oct. 2006, p.78]

PGNx Media

As long as you go into the game knowing that you’re going to be spending 1800 points ($22.50) to get the entire experience, you won’t be disappointed once you get the entire package.

Deeko

An incarnation of one of the greatest modern puzzle games, Lumines Live offers everything the original had and more, including new modes, new skins and, most importantly, the same great gameplay — that is to say, if you purchase all the add-ons.

IGN

It pains me to give a Lumines game a score in the 7's. I'm one of the biggest Lumines fans around, yet the cost and method of delivering the game is completely unsatisfactory and I simply can't give it the higher score that I want to.

With that said, though, Lumines Live is still a fun game. It has something none of the other versions will have in the expandability. However, the wrong direction has been taken by forcing you to “buy” the extra modes.

Game Chronicles

If you have a PSP then I’d still recommend getting the first Lumines, the new sequel, or even both. This is a game that is much more suited to portable systems.

Planet Xbox 360

Lumines is the big game that couldn't; a puzzle game with a great reputation has been seared into gamer's minds as an evil money grubbing swindle. It is too bad, because Lumines does offer a simple and addictive, though not perfect, puzzle game worth checking out for those with the stomach for the seedy side of Xbox Live Marketplace.

We'd rather pay a higher price and get the game proper than being told we'll have to shell out for at least two more packs upon purchase. [Christmas 2006, p.108]

The game itself is fine but the issue is the pricing. [Issue 14, p.116]

Eurogamer

Probably the only thing to say to people who feel cheated or ripped off by this tiered content set-up is that they simply shouldn't buy into Lumines Live until the range of downloadable content is broad enough to justify the cumulative cost - if indeed that happens - unless they have a powerful urge right now to play Lumines again on a big screen.

Gaming Nexus

Lumines on the Xbox 360 is just as much fun as it was on the PSP, but due to its high price tag and awkward control scheme it just doesn't feel like much of a bargain. If you don't mind paying $15 for an incomplete version of this puzzle game then you will end up having hours of fun trying to beat your high score.

Be wary of the secret costs though, I can’t express enough that those are a very sneaky way of robbing you out of your hard earned cash. A lot of people fell for it, a lot of people are bound to fall for it and it’s just a sh.tty thing to do on MS’s part. It’s a true shame that they picked Lumines Live! to try out this approach on DLC, Lumines deserves better.

With no clue as to when Lumines Live! will actually contain all of the features listed in its menu, nor how much it will cost to get them there, it's tough to recommend until these details are made available.

360 Gamer Magazine UK

A tremendous handheld game has been diluted by a muddled journey to the 360 home console, and a desire to screw as much cash out of games as possible. Vote with your wallets. [Issue 18, p.88]

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 7.3 (out of 10) based on 9 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Steve S. gave it a10:
The criticisms over price are unfounded as its actually cheaper than the PSP versions. A perfect game.

Mark H. gave it a4:
Just not much fun, feels like it should have been and I can't put my finger on why not, it just isn't.

Ryan W. gave it a7:
I loved this game for the PSP, but this is just a skeleton version of it. They make you pay even more money to upgrade and play things like "vs Computer" and the puzzle mode..... and so on.... Although it is still Lumines, it just feels half assed. Another complaint is that you cant exit and save your progress, like puting your psp on hold to come back to it later, since each game could take hours to play.

Michael L. gave it a7:
Great game hampered by the 360's mediocre D-Pad.

Dwayne J. gave it a10:
Great game. Worth every penny. Highly recommend it to anyone. Best live arcade game so far.
