Summary
The Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust video game gives gamers an all-access pass to the glitz, glamour and gorgeous women of Tinseltown. In this 3rd person adventure game, Larry takes a summer job working on his uncle Larry’s movie lot doing odd jobs and trying to uncover a mole from another studio who threatens to air the studio's dirty laundry in the tabloids. Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is a rollicking, innuendo-laden lampoon of Hollywood that features open world sand box game play that includes exploration, platforming, racing and puzzle-solving to complete missions. Additionally, the game features an all-new Directors Game that allows the player to create their very own "Larry Feature." True to form, Leisure Suit Larry Box Office Bust features sophomoric comedy and bombshell babes thanks to the writing talents of Allen Covert and an All-Star cast of actors and actresses, including Jay Mohr, Dave Attell, Shannon Elizabeth, Carmen Elektra, Patrick Warburton, Jeffrey Tambor, Nikki Cox, Peter Graves, Jane Lynch and Josh Keaton as the voice of Larry Loveage. Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust fails reproducing the original spirit of Leisure Suit series. It fails from a technological and artistic point of view too, with tasteless humor and poor graphic. Variety is the only good aspect of the game, with some good sets and a high number of minigames, but it isn't enough to make it a good game.

This Box Office Bust is a sample of how to change what worked completely for the worse.

Not only does it take away from what the original games did so well, it fails to execute even the simplest of gameplay necessities. The platform jumping is horrendous, the combat mechanics are atrocious and sitting through some of the dialogue is just plain painful.

While Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office or Bust does succeed in the execution and delivery of its smutty script, it fails on nearly every other account.

Larry Loveage is the nephew of Larry Laffer, but he's not half as charming as his uncle. This new game offers completely new gameplay that doesn't suit the character, along with many technical issues that make it a repetitive, uninspired and not so interesting game. It forgets Larry's legacy and tries its own ideas, but with little fortune.

Overly repetitive, boring and childish. There is not enough going on to keep you hooked.

Box Office Bust is one of the poorest games I have played on the 360 to date and I've played X-Men! The broken jumping and fighting mechanics zap out any sort of enjoyment you start to get from the title and the subtle humour of the old Larry games is nowhere to be found.

To be completely honest and brutal, there is nothing to like about Box Office Bust. It is hard to find any game that is completely worthless, but this is thankfully one of a kind.

Tedious, clumsy and uncomfortable to play, Box Office Bust is one of the least enjoyable platform games we've been subjected to this generation. [June 2009, p.123]
X360 Magazine UK
Terrible controls. [Issue#46, p.87]

I have played the Larry Laffer saga since the beginnings and I think if the developments of Leisure Suit Larry games continue in such this way, I already foresee the ending. The special charm with the erotic undertone has totally got lost in Leisure Suit Larry – Box Office Bust. Since Al Lowe leaves the Larry Laffer production, Larry as character isn’t the same again. The jobs become quickly boring, because the typical puzzle and combination tasks are completely missing. The new character does not offer the elegant macho charm, who can twist all ladies around the fingers. Larry Lovage looks clumsy, rude and cheeky.

Magna Cum Laude promised young adolescent players at least some (cartoon) nudity, but Big Office Bust has nothing to offer. Larry, what have they done to you?

Mindless, repetitive gameplay and a truly atrocious sense of humor help Leisure Suit Larry live up to its name--it's a total bust.

A horrible joke in and of itself, if you buy Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust the joke will be on you. We can think of a good number of other uses for your two hands; and we're using our to give this stinker two thumbs way down.

The lowest rating numbers here at IGN are reserved for games with nearly no redeeming qualities or interesting ideas, with next to nothing enjoyable to offer players, and which under no circumstances should be purchased by anyone. Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is, without a doubt, one of those games.

The worst offense Box Office Bust makes is giving Larry something resembling a plot other than trying to get in the pants of the opposite sex. Instead of the simplest plots devices, we get a convoluted story with weak gameplay that never truly delivers on the funny.

It's not funny, it's not fun to play and it's less erotic than psoriasis. As the Smurfs would say: **** off, Larry.

What a shame Larry, no chance to revitalize a such brilliant career. It's time to stop the show, before Sierra ruins what is still good in our memory. After more than 20 years of story, he deserves some rest. Go Larry, and don't come back!

It’s a crime to see how this series turned out, after a few titles with a quite good quality. This family of virtual seductive gigolos needs a reform, or maybe someone who revives the series from the ashes.

This is just awful. [June 2009, p.80]
GameFocus
I always try to find some positive beneath the negative. Unfortunately, Box Office Bust doesn’t deserve the try. It took away all the respect and love for the franchise I had left. Just like George Lucas tried to do with the Star Wars Holiday Classic, Codemasters should go out, find all the copies, bury them in the darkest place known to man, leave it there and never speak of it again.

Awful controls, boring missions, a terrible camera, hideous characters, and juvenile, unfunny dialogue make Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust one of the worst games in recent memory, and, if there’s any justice in the world, will mark the end of this poor, abused franchise.

Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is without a doubt one of the worst games in history. There isn't a single characteristic in the game that is worth spending your money on. With the buggy controls, it's the king of crap. Under any circumstances, do not buy this game.

The worst game on Xbox 360 to date. [June 2009, p.93]
Xbox World 360 Magazine UK
It's poorly designed and poorly made, and has the air of a game even the devs didn't care about. [July 2009, p.82]

Justin G gave it a0:
I bought this game with high hopes after the seam splitting laughter "Magna Cum Laude" offered. I ended up throwing the game away after 6 hours of gameplay. Not funny, not the "mature" content promised, awfully designed levels making it very difficult to get anywhere, and a terrible trailing camera makes every turn of the character send the camera soaring around and throwing off the control of the character. Without doubt the worst game for the 360 I have ever played.
Carlos S gave it a2:
Terrible. Truly Terrible. This game has major technical flaws that cripple any fun there might have been in the game. Camera control is non-existent, you'll find yourself running out of rooms you just ran into as the perspective changes instantly. For some bizarre reason, there's practically no elements of classic Leisure Suit Larry games present. Rather than chasing girls and dates using cheesy pickup lines, you will spend your time doing mindless tasks like cleaning up grafiti and delivering packages for fat guys. What's up with that? What's unforgivable though is that despite everything, the game just isn't fun. Plenty of flawed games manage to be fun (Resident Evil 5 comes to mind), but LSL BOB is not fun in any way. Avoid.
NeoVDR gave it a4:
I was very saddened by this game. Not that it was awful; I have seen games much, much worse than this. The whole game just feels "rough". While the comedy exists it's inconsistent. Truly funny bits that will have you on the floor in tears are interspersed with cliches and low level humor. This manages to diminish the game's only advantage. Gameplay-wise the game is atrocious with it's weird camera and clunky controls. The bad controls can be a game-stopper on more than one occasions. At one instance you have to chain an unbelievable number of jumps and because the combo chaining in this game is non existent I suspect that many users will end the game there. If not there then it surely will happen at the point when you have to fight 9 guards and do some jump chaining afterwards. The graphics are quite mediocre. Despite the use of Unreal Tech the game doesn't push any boundaries, hell it does not even reach the norm. And even though the graphics are not taxing still the pop in is evident. The best thing in the game is the audio, with great voice talent but dull tunes. This game had tons of potential yet somehow it lost it on the way. Even the smaller pricetag does not justify such mediocrity.
Neil gave it a1:
Everything about this game is bad, from a mini map that covers such a small area it's not worth having, a full map which doesn't show you where your mission objective is, dialogue that varies in volume from barely audable to loud in on sentence, confusing camera angles, a first person viewpoint that only works occasionally, stodgy controls, glitchy graphics (this uses the unreal engine?). I actually liked the previous Larry games for what they are, a purile but fun series of adventure games but this is amatuerish drivel. A cruel parody of a Leisure Suit Larry game.
Shannon L gave it a3:
I was a big fan of the original games back in the day so i was eager to try out this new release... I had not played the last one as it was originally banned in Australia.. The humour IS there - it is as immature and purile as it ever was - its just a big shame that the gameplay mechanics dont match up.. 1st problem is that they have madean 18rated kids platforming game! - which wouldnt be toobad if the actual platforming mechanics work and they dont. I liked the game until i reached a point that required me to first of all fight 9 enemies one after another; this wouldnt have been an issue if the fighting mechanics worked - they dont. You end up tapping A over and over again trying to connect combos that just arent registering. Instead you end up getting beaten to a pulp by enemies whose health seems to regenerate faster then your own! After more attempts at the fighting part of the mission then you would believe - i finally managed to scrape past it only to reach the next part of the mission - Climbing the top of an electricty tower - which in itself wouldnt be a problem if the climbing mechanics worked. They dont. the camera is so poorly implimented and the controls so unresponsive that i ended up plummeting from the tower and dying... Which would be fine if there was a checkpoint system in place. There isnt. So i had to go back to the start of the mission - back to fighting the 9 guys one after another. As you can imagine it was too frustrating for me to try again and to behonest - is the main reason why i am trading the game back in as fast and as soon as i can. Im not going to focus on the other MAJOR problems the game has like framerate issues whernever you turn the camera, NPCs who walk straight through each other (in cutscenes) ridiculous loading times, lack of ambient audio when moving around, constant repetitive fetch quests etc etc etc. I was willing to overlook these technical issues and enjoy the game - but the mission i outlined above was the last straw for me! Im not bad at games and have been gaming since for well over 15 years - and this was the most frustrating gaming experience ive had since trying to load games via cassette on the original Commodore 64... Avoid.
