Summary
Designed for the legions of Dynasty Warriors fans, DYNASTY WARRIORS 6: Empires is game that brings together the best aspects of the action and strategy genres. In this latest edition, players can experience Ancient China’s greatest and most glorious war as an all-powerful lord or as an officer. As a lord, gamers must think strategically. By deciding when to attack, when to resist invasion, or when to initiate policies, a lord can expand their power and influence. An easy-to-learn card collecting system lets players enact policies that will increase their empire’s strength, improve the abilities of their forces, and more. The cards that a player receives will depend on the attributes of the officers and their army. Players can also pledge their allegiance to a kingdom to become an officer. As an officer, players can suggest policies in the kingdom’s war council, complete missions for rewards, or even turn against their ruler should relations sour. Most eagerly awaited by fans is a game mode that allows players to create their own warrior. DYNASTY WARRIORS 6: Empires features an extensive character editing system with options to customize a warrior’s gender, build, skin tone, facial features, voice, clothing, weapon and more. Whomever players choose to be, they can now use mountain ledges and waterways to infiltrate enemy bases and launch surprise attacks on supply depots to change the flow of battle. [Koei]

At very least, rent this game and see if there's enough in here for you to pick it up for keeps.

Endless variations on battles and the ability to customize characters make this game a good value for serious fans. People looking for less involvement and hack-and-slash may want to rent or avoid this title altogether.

It's been a while since a Dynasty Warriors game was this addictive, and that's a huge bonus. While established fans will find the game to be incredibly fun, it's highly doubtful that longtime DW haters will be drawn into the series by this new one. Definitely a worthy purchase for those that like Koei's work.

For fans of the Warriors series, DW6:E falls right in line with giving the hardcore followers of Omega Force exactly what they want. For general action/strategy fans, DW6:E marks a solid step forward in creating a more consumable form of the Warriors universe.

You're getting the combat and battlefield strategy of the regular titles, combined with some of the more strategy-like elements of the Empire series.

It would have been nice to see the franchise branch out a little, but if you just can’t wait to get back into the Dynasty Warriors groove, you’ll find plenty to enjoy with Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires.

If there was a series that could really use a reboot, reinvention or a break Dynasty Warriors should be it. The series has been doing the same thing over and over again for so long and it’s not doing enough to entice new players to the series.

Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires is ultimately more of the same tired Dynasty Warriors gameplay, but the added strategic elements -- both in the expanding of your territory and mid-battle base management -- really help this game out.

I really can't say I recommend this title, especially when Dynasty Warriors 6 is sitting on the shelf right next to it. Unless of course, you're a Dynasty Warriors fanatic, and want to get a new take on the series.

Mowing down wave after wave of comatose fodder kills any chance of this game’s strategies having any meaning. An overhaul on the battlefield is sorely needed.

There are a few welcome additions, which fans will surely appreciate, but Dynasty Saga's gameplay and structure are getting more and more boring and old.

Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires likes to think that's it's a massive, deep game - there's even an encyclopaedia of historical events included in the start menu, so you can brush up on the background to your mindless slaughter - but the problem is, whilst it is certainly massive, it's a long, long way from being deep.

Even if being the best episode of the Empires series as of today, the game offers repetitive and in the long run boring gameplay. And the graphical defects, with an annoying pop-in/pop-out effect on environment objects, don't help.

While strategy elements make the title more appealing and accessible to a broader audience, ultimately it’s not enough to compensate the repetitive hack and slash gameplay. Unless you’re fan of the series, then there’s little that will hold your interest.

This time around, Dynasty Warriors’ horde-slaughtering action is complemented by a greater emphasis on strategy as you attempt to conquer China in Empire mode, the game’s meatiest offering.

It's another Empires iteration of a Dynasty Warriors game, and it comes with all the tedium and light strategy you'd expect.

Judging by the amount of new content, this is more of a stop-gap than a sequel. Hardcore fans will be best off waiting for the next installment, because this add-on feels desperately half-hearted.

A sub-par romp through what we’ve already seen many, many times before.

The truly frustrating thing however is that with some rather elementary things fixed (AI that isn't so terminally stupid, environments that don't look like they were made out of papier-mache, an involving combat mechanic) DW games would become not only more enjoyable for the mainstream but also surely more enjoyable for their fan base too. Until then however this is, and will continue to be, an experience to excite the devoted few rather than tempt the masses.

What makes a game great is the ability to deceive gamers in to believing in an alternate reality by creating immense visuals, believable sounds and a story that keeps you engrossed from start to finish, unfortunately Dynasty Warriors doesn’t do this.

It may be fun, but no amount of political (and entertaining) backstabbing can hide the fact that, at the end of the day, this is still Dynasty Warriors 6 with a slight incentive to keep hacking and slashing.

As it is, buying this overly, overly, overly familiar reprise would be akin to sticking two fingers up to every decent developer out there, then murdering their pets. Please Koei, no more. Please.

Adam B. gave it an8:
DW6:Empires is a fairly enjoyable entry to the series; the Empires games have always been some of the best Warriors games due to the strategy layer and customization features. While the game is mostly solid, the ways it improves on DW5:Empires are offset by the ways it gets things wrong. For example, the upgrade system is unintuitive, the difficulty is much higher, the lack of combos is jarring (you can basically just hit X forever), and some elements that were polished in earlier games are now broken (like selecting from a list of 200 music tracks but without an audio preview). Still, the graphics, sound, customization, and presentation are overall more improved, and the game is worth checking out for fans of the series. If you dislike the Warriors games, it probably won't change your opinion.
Matt M gave it an8:
Despite this game being similar to other games in the series, I really enjoyed it. I really don't have a problem with the graphics issues and I liked the models and edit outfits more than previous dynasty warrior games. I played the game exclusively co-op with my bro and we would plan out strategies together so that probably made it more enjoyable for me. I don't even think the combat system is stale either with all the extra abilities it made it more in depth than I've ever seen it. I gotten a lot of enjoyment from this game despite the mediocre reviews it has been getting. Its a hack and slash at heart but delivers well on the strategy elements as a good strategy can win you a battle that you would otherwise lose by far.
William A gave it a6:
Its more or less the same from the last empires game which is not really bad for dynasty warriors, this installment includes a way more detailed edit mode that kept me entertained with my own characters that would rule china but the confusion in 2 player and the drop of free mode and lack of online capabilities disappointed me. But other than that i am very much addicted to it.
cody s gave it an8:
DW6:E is a fun, and addictive game. Especially for fans of the series like me. There are only a couple mistakes in the game that i have seen. But considering there is no online game play, the game is a must buy for fans of DW series. With the new strategies and features of the game like the new weapons, custom characters, ect.. its rating leads up to an 8.5 for me.
