Summary
Battlestations: Pacific takes the action/strategy gameplay of Battlestations: Midway to the next level with more intense, strategic combat. Players can take to the skies and seas through two massive, action-packed campaigns across 28 missions, featuring some of the most decisive naval battles in history. A historically accurate U.S. campaign puts players in command of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific fleet through the Battles of Guadalcanal and on to Iwo Jima, Okinawa and victory. For the first time, players have a chance to rewrite history, commanding a Japanese campaign as the Imperial Japanese Navy from Pearl Harbor to Asia, Australia and beyond, expanding its empire throughout the Pacific Rim. Battlestations: Pacific takes the battle online with a massively enhanced multiplayer experience, offering five new and innovative co-op and team-based modes for up to eight players. ‘Siege’ and ‘Duel’ offer an all-out action experience, allowing players to control a selection of war machines as each side battles to turn the tide of war; joining forces for ‘Competitive’, players compete side-by-side against the opposing AI forces; ‘Escort’ allows for a mix of action and strategy, with players escorting or attacking a key naval unit as it heads to its destination; and ‘Island Capture’ offers a compelling strategic experience, with players not only battling for supremacy of the seas, but also capturing and controlling the island archipelago. What Battlestations Pacific delivers is something that is all too rare these days. This is a game that's fun and action-packed without treating the customer like a fool. The blend of realism and arcade fun is beautifully balanced - think of this as the warfare equivalent of Project Gotham Racing.

There has been a surprising amount of thought and attention to detail put into Battlestations: Pacific, even though it often plays like an arcade title. Battlestations: Midway was a surprise hit and is still one of my favorite console games. It is a short experience and was easy for the most part and it also failed to finish the fight as it were. Battlestations: Pacific fixes much of the complaints from the first one and brings World War 2 home once again for arm chair generals.

After a slow start this game blossoms into a superb action-strategy title. It is not going to be for everyone though so you might want to check out the demo before committing yourself to a full purchase. The balance between combat and strategy is perfectly managed. The RTS foundations are in place and there are plenty of core and online missions to test player mettle (and patience), but, as with Battlestations: Midway, the control interface is still unwieldy, the action is still stodgy and unfulfilling, and the aesthetics are still hampered by distinctly last-gen failings.

I know, I know, this rating seems a little steep, but this game is great. It offers a great blend between strategy and action that you don't find with other games. The Naval combat (with Air Support) is a fresh change from regular old FPSs or Air only games... There's a demo on XBox Live; check it out for yourself. I wouldn't be surprised if you quicky see why there are lots of us who absolutely love this game (and the first one, Battlestations: Midway, even though it had some annoying bugs and a weak multiplayer setup, which have been addressed in this sequel).

Based on the demo and the first game, i would say this game is an absolute knock out in this genre. There is nothing else like it for someone who enjoys a strategy game on the consoles, but want more than just a strategy game. The graphics are amazing when compared with the first and the new skirmish game modes that can be played offline are what the old game was lacking and what, in my opinion held it back from getting a much better score.
