Summary
Providing gamers with the most authentic Ashes experience possible without having to don their whites, Ashes Cricket 2009 is fully licensed by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club, the world's most famous cricket club and owner of the Ashes urn) and Cricket Australia, providing the game with all the official players, kit, stadia - including Lord's and The Brit Oval - and equipment from this year’s npower Ashes Series. Coming from the home of video game cricket, Ashes Cricket 2009 is set to build on the heritage that Codemasters has enjoyed with its best-selling Brian Lara series and continue to lead the field with great batting, bowling and fielding gameplay and authenticity that made the series a huge hit with cricket fans the world over. Produced by Codemasters, the game is currently being developed by Transmission Games (Brian Lara 2007 Pressure Play (PSP)). Delivering all the exciting, athletic, skilful and technical elements of the sport, the game’s comprehensive ‘Ashes’ mode features all five Tests played out at carefully detailed recreations of each authentic venue. In addition, gamers can play Test matches, One Day Internationals, 20 over games and a series of challenge modes. The high definition current generation versions feature full online multiplayer as well as support for local multiplayer games. [Codemasters]

Ashes Cricket 2009 is a top game but it does overcomplicate in certain areas, however there is no doubt that cricket fans are going to love this title.
Its greatest success is in managing the balancing act between bowling and batting – a hurdle at which many cricket games fall, but one that’s deftly dealt with by developers Transmission.

Even though there is a distinct lack of content on offer in the title, Ashes Cricket's gameplay depth more than makes up for these shortcomings and provides a gaming all-rounder in the process.

It’s a great game that I would implore any cricket fan to go out and get.

Ashes Cricket 2009 overall provides an excellent rendition of the much love game, and despite its flaws, offers a very good playing experience for both cricket fans and newcomers to the sport.

Ashes Cricket 2009 might not be the prefect recreation of cricket that some might have hoped for, but it's a lot better than most people likely expected.
It's slow, rarely what you'd call action packed, full of complex rules and batting is ten times more enjoyable than bowling. However if you love the sport itself these cease to be a problem and instead become signs that Transmission Games have done their job admirably.

Cricket fans all over the country should at least try this game out, as it could be a long while before another title like this comes along for the sport.

If you already love cricket, then you’ll absolutely devour everything Ashes 2009 has to offer, from full-on test matches (including The Ashes, obviously), one-day internationals and 20 over games.

There’s no denying that Ashes Cricket 2009 is the most comprehensive cricket sim on the market. It looks average at best but the core game mechanics have been pretty much nailed.
What’s important here is that the core mechanics are well executed and there’s little doubt that they are. Ironically, the realistic feel robs the game of its excitement. We wouldn’t want to see Bigs style Turbo modes necessarily - that’s just not cricket - but something to crank the pace up just a little would have been great, particularly in single player mode.

Due to the rarity of cricket games in the release schedules, the lifespan of Ashes is at least a year and it's tempting 'come back for more if you think you're hard enough' feel will always have you coming back with a vengeance, only to edge your first ball right into the hands of a slip.

Ashes Cricket 2009 is a solid recreation of the sport and this summer's big sporting event, but it's lacking spark and feels a little slight in terms of depth.
Read Full Review >Official Xbox Magazine UK
Pleasingly, the more you play it the more you'll enjoy it. A well-timed Andrew Strauss four then, if not quite a full-blown Kevin Pietersen six.

It would have been nice to see some more modes, licenses and improvements, but Ashes Cricket 2009 continues the Codemaster cricket dominance by providing a fun and functional game.
Much like the real thing, this is a niche sporting title and one that will have a surge in popularity during the hype of the Ashes only to be forgotten about shortly after. It is a solid game that you can have plenty of fun with, but do not expect it to keep you hooked for long unless you are a serious fan.
Recreating the cricket experience is only part of making a complete game, and unfortunately a lack of depth means only fans of the sport will derive much enjoyment after the first few hours.

A modest effort, but hardcore ash-'n'-willow boys will savour it all summer long. [Oct 2009, p.92]
GameSpot
Bugs and glitches mar an otherwise fair attempt at bringing the gentleman's sport to consoles.
As a studied game where you might want to play the full Ashes tournament against the AI Ashes Cricket 2009 is lacking.
Ashes Cricket 2009 is a rent-first, buy-if-you-dare title. There is a lot to like in its online capabilities, but for a game that promised to elevate the cricketing genre to stellar heights, it has fallen far, far, short of the mark.

Overall the foundations are there to produce an excellent cricket game, however Codemasters will be ultimately very disappointed with this release, rushed with total lack of detail.

A poor representation of cricket. [Issue#50, p.94]

nely J. gave it a9:
Best cricket game I have played in ages. Better then the Ricky ponting/ Brian Lara series and overall I foud it quite fun
George C gave it a6:
The game is okay but the batting is just too easy. A cricketer like myself knows how hard batting can be and effort much effort is required for that perfect shot. This game turns cricket into a game of simple timing, ruining any funamentals of cricket which is why I refunded the game. Good look and feel but the batting was just too easy, if it was $30 i would have still kept it
Nitish gave it a6:
A Rushed game.Could have been so much better if they had spent more time on it. Well, atleast the core mechanics are better than some of the other cricket games available. Batting needs to be a little more harder. Bowling is much better than what I expected, but still a little more customisation and variations are needed. Fielding is good and the quicktime events are great. The graphics look like something from 2006-ish time period. The animations are jerky at times and many other factual cricket mistakes are committed in the game. If you are an avid cricket fan,you can try out the demo and then buy it. New to cricket ? good luck playing and having fun!
Hamza N gave it a7:
The game play is great easy controls with great sound effects. But the displaying of statistics really disappointed me..no high scores or wicket takers in a series are calculated..
Mr Svennis gave it an8:
Much improved over Brian Lara. The fielding is better but still a bit dodgy. The batting is much better with the addition of footwork but the bowling is a bit weak. Overall a good game.
Apocalypse B gave it a4:
Just like England recently Ashes batting collapse, this is a weak effort. When batting (the best part of the game) becomes hard work, you know you're in for a rough time. Brian Lara is by far STILL the better game, don't waste your cash on this inferior rehash of it!
Jeremy M gave it a2:
Rubbish, Graphics are poor, AI is incredibly poor. Realism is terrible, has come out of the oven far too soon. Very disappointing.
