Summary
Okami tells the story of a mythical sun god who sets out to restore a dismal world, decimating the forces of evil who stand in the way by commanding the elements and mythical abilities the deity possesses. Mixing Japanese folklore and a stunning traditional Japanese art style, players must utilize an inventive control scheme to overcome the challenges and evil that await. By enhancing the unique gameplay, visual style and story line of Okami with the control of the Wii Remote, it is sure to be the ultimate version of the game. Originally designed for the PS2 and released in 2006, Okami now comes alive in an entirely new way on the Wii with its visually stunning art style and beautiful scenic 3D levels that have the appearance and texture of paper scrolls brushed with watercolor-like calligraphy art. Throughout the vibrant and distinctive surroundings, players must use the Wii remote to interact with a dynamic world and cast of characters. The blend of stylized graphics, movements and unique gameplay will result in a rich and dynamic experience never seen before. [Capcom]

For younger Twilight Princess fans, this is your true coming-of-age adventure...and for older gamers free of nostalgia's shackles, Okami provides a far more refreshing, creatively stimulating journey.

It's as well-designed as Zelda, as involving as Final Fantasy, and as beautiful as anything you've ever seen; it belongs with the best of the Zelda series at the very apex of its genre.

When you decide to make no compromises, you can expect either a catastrophe or a miracle. Okami is the second case. This game is the phantom that scares other games with its own perfection and neatness. [Aug 2008]

The story is deslightful and has plenty of subtle humour all the way through it. [June 2008, p.70]

What makes Okami so timeless is an art style that trancends technology. It looks as new today as it did in 2006. [Apr 2008, p.40]

Still, it's one of the few games that can overcome shaky fundamentals in light of an astonishingly engaging adventure. [May 2008, p.77]

While the novel gameplay and awe-inspiring art style will be the hook for many, the tale told here is one filled with heart and humor. [May 2008, p.95]

While some minor control issues here blemish an otherwise flawless package, Okami remains one of the best games of recent years, if not of all time. It’s engaging, original, and a true work of art — Wii owners looking for a game worthy of their time need look no further.

The Wii controls aren’t perfect for celestial paintbrush techniques, but they certainly don’t detract from the overall experience. With widescreen support, and improved visual fidelity, you’ll find very little to complain about.

And in the End... It's the rare game that can be ported to a new system two years after its original release, nearly pixel for pixel, and yet still feel like a fresh new experience, but "Okami" is just such a game, thanks to an excellent implementation of the Wii controller on an already engaging game.

Some attack controls aren't smoothly read, but otherwise, this is a masterpiece you'll want to add to your personal collection.

At a length of around 30 hours the game has more punch then the average adventure game of its kind, and while it feels a little long and can be frustrating at parts, I definitely place Okami near the top of the Wii releases, and possibly on the top of all adventure releases.

While a few minor things may have been lost in the port, I’d argue that ultimately this is a more important game for the Wii than it was for the PS2.

Age isn't kind to many games, but with the addition of motion controls for the celestial brush and support for widescreen and progressive scan displays, Okami has been updated enough to make it even more relevant today than it was in 2006.

A must-have title for anyone who has ever loved a Zelda game, a Clover Studio game, or any time-intensive 3D adventure game. The only people I would advise against buying Okami are those on the extreme left or extreme right of the "casual/hardcore" gamer divide.

Clover and Ready at Dawn have given the Wii a beautiful and epic journey. One of the best games on the system that any gamer with a Wii needs to own. Okami is a masterpiece that is not likely to be duplicated and deserves to be in everyone's gaming library.

Without a doubt one of the best games available for the Wii. If you haven't had the chance to play the game on the PlayStation 2, then now is your chance. It's more than worthy of your money, thanks to the unique style and great gameplay.

An excellent action adventure. It's suprisingly difficult to draw a straight line with wiimote, though. [June 2008]
AtomicGamer
This is still an excellent title, but to me it just doesn't hold up on the Wii quite like I expected it to.

The final verdict is that Okami for the Wii is an excellent offering and a fine addition to your library if you don't already own the PlayStation 2 version. The small complaints are a small price to pay for such an exquisite adventure, a title that really proves that quality third-party support for Nintendo is much more than a dream at this point.

While it isn't necessary a quantum leap over the PS2 version -- and while the game has its faults -- this is still a solid title that hardcore Wii owners will want to consider adding to their library.

When all is said and done, Okami is a game that shows it's possible for a third-party title to be successful on the Nintendo hardware.

Ready at Dawn did a good job in creating a motion sensor game that focuses on art and the beauty of it. The story itself isn’t extremely original and that leads to the game feeling kind of bland.

It seemed like a perfect match for Wii, but Okami falls agonisingly short of brilliance. Still great fun to play, though. [Issue#23, p.60]
GameSpy
This is a marvelous game in terms of artistry, sound, and yes, even gameplay, despite being hamstrung by the poorly implemented Celestial Brush controls. Despite the headaches you'll undoubtedly experience, it's still worth playing Okami on your Nintendo Wii.

Unfortunately, we just can’t recommend the Wii version as the best playing Okami even though it's "newer."

Aside from the game-ruining Celestial Brush control and intro, Okami is really something special.
Read Full Review >Cheat Code Central
I recommend those who've played the game before to just stick to the PS2 version and enjoy it as it was originally made. The Wii version doesn't have anything new to offer, and the control issues detract from a perfect experience.

Okami is a work of genius, but you should play the original game instead of the Wii version if you can. [May 2008, p.88]

John B gave it a10:
Okami is a great game by it's own right, but not as immersive as the greatest true Zelda games. Nearly every aspect of this game has polished near perfection. Somehow, i still felt that the game was lacking "something". Sidequests were pretty annoying and not fun, and Amaterasu's "funny" sidekick Issun was a total jerk. Some of the boss fights were truly awesome, but the final boss, oversized superball, was a major dissapointment. I'm still inclined to give this game a 10, since it does so many things right, and looks and sounds beautiful.
Carrie B gave it a2:
I was enjoyed the game but gave up about 45 minutes into it when I couldn't advance. The brush strokes made the game completely aggravating. They have to be perfect otherwise they won't work and with the jumpiness of the remote this was near impossible. I play games to enjoy myself not to make me suicidal.
Ryan gave it a9:
Gameplay, visual-appeal, robust audio, clever-controls, genre-bending concepts are only the tip of the iceberg in this game. Many aspects surpass the Zelda series, (although it is obviously based heavily on that construct), and the only reason it doesn't receive that extra one mark from me is that I don't particularly like playing as a wolf! It's brilliant in every important area and can only be treasured as a true unique gaming experience. Phenomenal.
j0ma2 _ gave it a10:
If the most important for you is a 3D stunning graphic, this game is not for you. Otherwise, you must bow in front of the best adventure game I have played on PC or Wii. Excellent 2D graphics, traditional Chinese pictures style, and music integrated with the story. Smooth movement of your character that makes you feel as flexible as bamboo while you run, jump, charge or parry. Guaranteed lots of hours of playing. Puzzles are not too easy to bore the addictive player and they are not too difficult to exasperate de casual gamer. A must for everyone.
Vianyte X gave it a10:
If you love Action-Adventure games like The Legend of Zelda then you should love this as its very simular (and in my opinion: Better!). If you love cartoony art style, Japanese culture and wolves then you would proabably love this even more. Or if you're looking for something new and original (Even if you have played a lot of Zelda games) then Okami is a great game to play. For me this is by far my favourite game on the Wii and my favourite game of all time. Okami does have some RPG elements to it but i would class it as Action-Adventure. The game is very based off ancient Japanese culture which is fantastic for me as i don't know much about it and find it really interesting. The graphics are the best i've seen in a game ever. The Wii controls suit the game perfectly and you shouldn't really be having any problems with it. The game even gives you tips for drawing something tricky like a straight line which really help. The characters are well presented, full of personality and easy to get attached to. Even Amaterasu (The white wolf) has a better personality than most characters (I'm looking at Link and Mario) and can't even talk. Issun is also a great character and is hilarious too. What he says about the Priestess's breasts is worth quoting. The storyline is quite simple but quite well thought out and decent. There are many twists and things to keep the game exciting. The game is quite easy for someone who plays games a lot (AKA "Hardcore gamer") but isn't bothersome. Its one of the only 2 flaws in the game that i can think of. The other is that there should have been more monsters. I know that Japanese culture has absolutely loads of monsters. Probably more than all the other cultures in the rest of the world put together. Seeing more of these in Okami would have been awesome. There are still a lot (more than Zelda) but i would have liked more. The Bosses however are probably the best i have ever seen in a game. They are all unique and interesting and some of them even have personalities of their own! My favourite of them is the last one, which helps make one of the best game endings ever. I could go on a lot longer why Okami is so good but you, YES YOU! Need to buy it for yourself and give it a go if you haven't already. Ignore Johhny C, it is a fantastic port. I think the Wii version is actually better than the PS2 version. If you have a Wii or a PS2 then buy it. You are missing out on such an Amazing Game.
Colin C gave it a10:
Loved this game! Love the controls, although yes, using the wii remote to control the paintbrush did take a couple of hours to get used to. Not bad considering I put in over 50 hours to the game. The story is epic. Just when you think it's done, it goes and get bigger and bigger. Graphics? On my 65" widescreen with component cables, it was absolutely beautiful. I breezed through most of the combat, but still I always find it fun. And the bosses are a definite high-point. If you haven't played it yet, then go and give it a try. Now I'm off to pick up Fallout 3.
Swizz T. gave it a1:
I have a big problem with this game, seeing as the PS2 version was one of the best looking, most playable games I ever saw on that console. I got the Wii version and couldn't wait to play it only to find that the graphics looked washed out and seemed to have lost their 3D 'look' and bad graphical jitters in places... and this was in the first 30 seconds of playing the game. The worst thing of all though is that I can't even draw the with the brush to gain the first power! No matter how many times I try and draw, it looks like my brush stroke at the beginning doesn't even register on the screen. This is apart from the fact that my brush jumps all around the screen at times? Have I a bust Wiimote? All in all, I've had to use all my self control to not Frisbee my game disc out of the window. Has anyone else had similar issues, especially with the brush controls?
