Eventually Grayson learns that his efforts have been futile... in Western Europe the Chimera have evolved a new method of converting humans. The European resistance – the Maquis – enlist Grayson's help, and he joins Cartwright and Parker in Operation Overstrike. The war to retake the European continent has begun. A third person action-adventure game created specifically for PSP with an advanced third person targeting system designed specifically for the platform. Sony Bend was able to bring Resistance to the PSP in a way that takes advantage of the system’s strengths and feels like it’s own game in the Resistance universe instead of a dumbed down version of the console versions.

Resistance: Retribution is today probably the best 3rd person action title for the PSP, not only or its excellent story and impeccable gameplay, but also for the huge possibilities its multiplayer modes offer, and the possibility to connect with Resistance 2 for the PS3. Undoubtedly a very important title in the PSP portfolio, and a must buy for all the action fans.

PSP has waited too long to receive a game of this characteristic that's able to sustain an immersive story that stands between both Resistance's for PS3. And there's James Grayson, a remarkable character that will gain your sympathy on the first minutes of gameplay.

Resistance: Retribution is a perfect portable adaptation of the PS3 series. Sony bend has created a good shooter for PSP with a solid campaign and a good multiplayer mode. The Resistance universe is represented in its engaging storyline. Sadly the control represents a great issue in the game because of the PSP lack of the second analog stick, but we have good news because we can take advantage of the Resistance PS3 connection extras. A must play for the followers of the franchise and one of the best action games in the PSP line.

Ultimately, Retribution doesn’t usurp the PS3 entries in this franchise, but it doesn’t undermine them either. Instead, it’s as solid a side story as God Of War: Chains Of Olympus was to that series. Though, we must admit, your enjoyment all depends on your perspective on the PSP’s ideas of FPS-style controls.

Much like Resistance 2, Retribution is more than the sum of its parts. The single-player campaign may be linear and stagey, but it's also effortlessly fun and incredibly polished. The multiplayer doesn't contain many surprises, but it does a better job of matching the online modes of "proper" consoles better than most rivals in its genre. Annoyances are minor and fleeting in nature, and the game punches above its weight with a substantial and coherent feel that too many handheld offerings lack.

A great first effort, which is largely marred by a limitation of the PSP itself and not necessarily a fault of the game's design. If you can get over the controls and really get used to them, you'll find, what is essentially, a portable Gears of War.

Pelit (Finland)

The pocket-size Resistance tries it's best to imitate a shooter on PSP. Unfortunately the PSP itself sets boundaries, which are impossible to go around. The controls don't work and the lack of precision is aided with automatic aiming, which practically kills all the challenge. The graphics are good, there are few good one-liners, and the story is worth checking out. It's a shame, that the game tumbles in basics. [May 2009]

78

InsideGamer.nl

Resistance Retribution offers a great deal of entertainment, both in the relatively lengthy single player and in the impressive multiplayer. It lacks the polish and overall impressing quality of a game like God of War: Chains of Olympus though, and once again confirms the fact that the PlayStation Portable will never be able to handle a First/Third Person Shooter.

If you take it on its own terms it is a solid enough title, hampered only by the PSP’s lack of a second analog stick and the terrible script. Whether that’s enough depends on whether you’re a PSP-owner looking for an uncomplicated bit of fun, or whether you’re a massive corporation trying to revive the fortunes of an increasingly overlooked bit of hardware.

Level7.nu

Resistance: Retribution is a third person action game where you're treated to a side story taking place in between the two installments on Playstation 3. The game's protagonist is new but environments and the characters that populate them are familiar. The controls represent the major issues in this game, despite an overly helpful auto aim. Somewhat flawed controls in conjunction with an unbalanced level of challenge leads to way too many game over screens. Despite all these flaws this is still a good action game.

[Anonymous] gave it a5:
I feel like I should write a review called "Like beating your head against a wall, but no wall available? Try Resistance: Retribution. It comes so close to being a very good game, but in the end only serves to highlight Sony's mistake in not including a second analog nub. You want it, bad, but it's not there. The cutscenes are gorgeous and there is a lot of nice voice-acting, but it becomes a pretty wrapping on a package full of frustration. The difficulty spikes between boring and "OMG Boilers! Let's start the never-ending respawn cycle!" I could see this having appeal to a few people who can look beyond and trudge through the gameplay, but for a portable title, it should be a little more pick-up and play friendly.

Chomik R gave it a10:
This is great game. When I play I feel something like the fresh air. That's what i waited for!

Roman T gave it a9:
I just beat this game the other day on the Normal difficulty and I must say this was a pleasant experience. Just about everything, from the graphics, gameplay, storyline, and sound was top notch. Personally, I didn't like default controls that this game uses and would recommend switching to an alternative (aiming with analog stick) option. I only really have a couple of minor issues with this game: first, the collision detection when using a sniper rifle is quite poor, making that weapon almost useless in many situations; secondly, the game is not taking a real advantage of the physics engine - having silly ragdolls is fine, but I believe there should've been more physical interactions with environment and objects. Otherwise, a great game indeed.

Austin C gave it an8:
Today, I went to GameStop with $65, I bought Resistance: Retribution and GTA: Vice City Stories. I have played about 5 minutes of GTA, mostly becaues its glitchy/boring. So, I started playing Resistance in the store, and after 15 minutes through the game I quit, went home, and hit multiplayer online. After getting through the stress of the controls (I switched the controls halfway through playing), It was surprisingly fun, with grenades, plasma grenades, rocket launchers, machine guns and what not. Also -- Playing with friends on the same WiFi is fun. Although, it's kinda of disappointing there is no Coop. NOTE: You have to upgrade to V. 5.0.3 to play, it comes with it (you don't need internet access to upgrade to 503).

Luke B gave it a9:
Great game! Good graphics, solid game play and story make for a great experience on the PSP. I prefer Resistance to the Syphon Filter series previously done by Sony Bend. The game flows more and the story appeals to me. The game controls are fine, I certainly don't have any issues with it. I am struggling to understand why such a good game is receiving reviews below 8 or 8.5. For those wanting a fantastic game with top graphics, game play, story and hilarious, cheesy one liners (courtesy of Grayson) I would recommend picking up a copy a.s.a.p. For those wanting crappy side scrolling, lame graphics, stick to your DS.

Bob Disenfranchised gave it a4:
Wow, how dissapointing can the PSP get? I am not expecting anything grand. A simple game, say a well done side-scroller of gameboy graphic quality would even appease me. Unfortunately, even with decent graphics and impressive sound, many PSP games are entirely not worth $40. This game, with horrid controls made for the skills of a 3rd grader, is not worth more than $12. All hype and desperate reviews, this game dissapoints. The previous two Siphon filter games are better, and even they were lacking. I get the feeling that many PSP Official Sites give such lackluster games high praise so they can keep there jobs. Example: This game. Looks horrible (even for PSP standards,) plays horrible, and is downright tepid. God, please inspire gamemakers to use the PSP in a suiting fashion...please cause them to make a worthwhile game.

James M gave it an8:
A good effort by Sony Bend to create a succesfull FPS on the PSP. Overall the game is pretty good, the aiming is simple, the graphics are excellent and the campaign is enjoyable. The main problem for me is a recurring problem with FPS titles on the PSP which is the controls but that is mainly the fault of the psp rather then the game. The storyline was rather tedious and hard to enjoy with the main protagonist bearing such a horrible fake cokney accent. But overall a great game and certainly worth the purchase
