Pocket Gamer UK
A poor man's God of War that makes no apology for its fast and furious fighting gameplay. The perfect, blood-soaked introduction to the PSP Minis platform.

Hero of Sparta is a fun little action game with all the trimmings of God of War in a cheaper package. Is it as good as Chains of Olympus? Well, no. But it does have eight solid stages of kills and thrills, plus it controls quite well on the PSPgo when compared to the still-fun iPhone edition (which, incidentally, is four bucks cheaper).

Repetitive as all hell, but the only real option if you're looking for a little violence. [Dec 2009, p.18]
Play UK
A weak God of War clone with clunky controls. [Issue#186, p.87]
TheSixthAxis
The sound is awful, the fighting is incredibly repetitive (no combos, just mash square and triangle) and worst of all, it’s very glitchy: on one occasion I got near the end of a level, only to actually get stuck in the graphics.

On a mobile phone platform like the iPhone, Hero of Sparta stands out as something quite impressive, but simply porting a game like this to the PSP as a Mini isn't good enough.

The controls are sticky, the animation is staggered and lumpy, and overall it's not worth playing at all. [Christmas 2009, p.95]
Eurogamer
The titles that truly impress on bite-sized platforms are rarely those that try to ape "proper games", but the ones that turn hardware and storage restrictions into opportunities and innovations. Hero of Sparta isn't one of those games, and there are better Minis more deserving of your money.
