Summary
Long ago, without reason or explanation, the mysterious labyrinths came to be, and the world was changed forever. In a constant state of flux, they sprawl across the world like a web, connecting towns and villages, mountains, lakes, and deserts. Many adventurers delved into these labyrinths dreaming of riches, and those fortunate enough to return did so with amazing stories and unimaginable treasures. It was only natural that the children of the world began to look upon these heroes with unconditional admiration, eager to follow in their footsteps. And so, academies for adventurers were born. Particus Academy may not be the first such school, but we certainly endeavor to be the best! Here at Particus, we strive to equip young men and women with the tools they'll need to become full-fledged adventurers. Bravery, spellcraft, swordplay, 101 ways to avoid dying a horrible death... These and many other lessons and skills await prospective students! We hope your studies here are as enriching and productive as you've dreamed they would be. Over 500 character possibilities - 10 races, 2 genders, 3 alignments, and 15 majors add up to incredible opportunity to customize your party! Change majors for further customization at higher levels. 80 hours of classic dungeon crawling - This is as classic as dungeon crawling gets in an ever-changing 3-D labyrinth containing more than 75 maps full of puzzles, traps, and treasure. Battle hundreds of monster types and uncover over 1300 item types. Flexible alchemy system - Offering more than 400 recipes, this system allows you to synthesize new items from random components found in the labyrinths, as well as customize your weapons' attributes, range, and strength. It's a tough little game, but it has a lot of content to check out, and a pretty appealing art style, along with a catchy soundtrack.

Class of Heroes is about the gameplay, though, not the story or visuals or sound, and it triumphs magnificently.

There's so much depth to be found in Class of Heroes for fans of the dungeon crawling genre, it's almost overwhelming how much time you can spend playing with the details. On the other hand, the learning curve is much steeper than other games of its kind, and it may turn off gamers who pick it up due to the cute anime look and have no idea what they are getting themselves into.

Class of Heroes manages to complete the job of being an introductory RPG, and it does a couple of things right, but it wasn't much fun.

Class of Heroes delivers some quality dungeon crawling, which will wake up the back-tracking, corner-hugging, poke-at-everything completionist within you. Unfortunately, the game strays too far into the casual realm when it comes to combat. It’s simply too easy for its own good, which slightly sours what might’ve been an awesome JRPG.

If there had been a stronger plot, more character customization options, a reasonable difficulty curve, or more unique fighting elements, this would have been one of the best dungeon-crawlers in recent memory. Class of Heroes isn’t a bad game, but doesn’t do enough to make you want to stay with it for the many, many hours it will take to complete it.

How much you play really depends on how much you like grinding and Rogue-like dungeon-crawling and if you mind the first-person visuals. If you really like that sort of thing, expect 50+ hours of fun. If not, just skip this class.

Fans of dungeon crawling RPG's will find something to enjoy because there is tremendous depth, lots of items to create and deep party mechanics. But for everyone else, there's nothing compelling enough to warrant playing this game.

Class of Heroes won't be the game most RPG fans drool over, but it's worth playing if you love dungeon crawlers, don't mind the repetition or unfair difficulty, and embrace the idea of investing several hours in a game whose experience rarely changes.

If you're still interested in the aforementioned grind, you'll find plenty to do in Class of Heroes. But I think some "classic" gameplay mechanics are better left in the past.

If you've been aching for a hardcore RPG experience on the PSP, go to class. [Apr 2009, p.83]

Niche-dwelling masochists will thrive on mastering the murky depths of Heroes, but everyone else should throw a smoke bomb and run away. [July 2009, p.83]

Aris R. gave it a3:
At first, i was happy to create my own characters with custom stats, races, and talents.... the fun ended there. First going into the dungeon was like a really boring version of Dark Spire. The characters mini stat windows often made it difficult to see who needed healing and there was little excitement in just pressing X after awhile. I'll admit, ive been spoiled by Atlas's prior offerings of grid based combat, but this for me was below par. Frankly, if i wanted to delve into hardcore RPG, the time playing this game would be best spent starting a far more exciting paper and dice game of D&D.
Thomas K. gave it a10:
This game is beyond awesome. The creativity that spikes this magnificent gaming masterpiece is just outstanding. I just bought this game this morning(after pre-ordering it) and instantly fell in love with it. The different classes and races just adds to the enjoyment. Now my level 25 Dwarf Mage is grouped up with a bunch of my friends that I named after my real friends. This is a game that I would recommend to just about anyone who loves RPG games. Beware though the game is very difficult in the very beginning! Besides that it still is my favorite PSP game of all time!
