Summary
The biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed that the menace of Resident Evil had been destroyed, along comes a new terror to send shivers down players' spines. Chris Redfield, returning Resident Evil hero, has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organization, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. He is joined by a new partner, Sheva Alomar, who lends her strength, intelligence and sharp-shooting skills to the mission. In order to survive, Chris and Sheva must work together to take on the challenges of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. Utilizing a revolutionary new 2-player co-op mode of gameplay, players assume control of either Chris or Sheva and experience Resident Evil in new ways. In Resident Evil 5, Capcom has players fearing the daylight as much as they have feared shadow in previous games. [Capcom]

Perhaps Resident Evil 5's most remarkable achievement is how it deftly straddles the line between the franchise's sometimes endearing, sometimes frustrating, legacy gameplay mechanics while incorporating more contemporary action adventure elements like enhanced interaction and exploration of environments and a decidedly more shooter-like control scheme. [Mar 2009, p.38]

I played it start to finish in three sittings, have played it extensively in other capacities while working on this review, and still can't wait to go back and play through it again cooperatively on higher difficulties to open up more of its goodies. If that's not the definition of a fine action game, I don't know what is.

The co-op implementation is great and the extra unlockable provides more than enough incentive to play the game through multiple times. If the controls don't bother you, anybody can have a great time playing through this adventure.

Resident Evil 5 digs deep into the series' origins with its overall story and slightly enhances the overall addicting gameplay that left its mark with Resident Evil 4

Co-op changes your approach to survival horror, and the masterful pacing ensures you never take your eye off the action. Like its predecessor, Resident Evil 5 is destined to be remembered as one of the best games of its time.

Resident Evil 5 is like an expensive diamond. The outside is polished well and the inside is strong enough to go through iron. The graphics of the gameplay and the cinematics are beautiful and full of detail. We can understand the criticism of the controls, but you can easily get used to it. The co-op is an exciting feature and when you are without a friend it turns out that Sheva is a great companion. Resident Evil 5 doesn’t revolutionize the series, but it is still a fantastic game to play.

Resident Evil 5 carries on the same action path started with its predecessor. The main innovation is of course co-op mode, which delivers good fun if played online, but due to glitches in the friendly A.I., spoils the single player experience. Die hard fans will be happy to know that the story goes deep, and it's well connected with the last chapters of the series. Graphics and sound are simply stunning. If you miss the old survival horror genre you will surely be disappointed, but Resident Evil 5 is still a great action game, especially if enjoyed all the way through with a friend.

Just remember: when possible, aim for the head (if it has one); don’t be afraid to run like a little girl; and this being a Resident Evil game, expect everything living to mutate horribly with the expressed purpose of using your internal organs as a hat. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If you have a friend to play along with, then that's obviously the way to go, but don't let the thought of playing with the AI deter you from picking this up. It's a great game, and well worth your time.

The setting change works well, and the story will please series followers, with surprises and comebacks which will thrill Resident Evil fans. Resident Evil 5 offers a quality experience, despite some incongruities - all of them can be overlood -, which will engage us in front of the TV for hours, thanks to its gameplay and its high doses of action, tension and fun.

Lots of action and stunning visuals, but fans of the earlier RE episodes could be disappointed by the lack of goose-bump moments.

Resident Evil 4 taught the industry so much, and in turn we expected RE5 to at least learn from what others have since added to those accomplishments. Instead, it jams the series full of gasoline-enriched testosterone, keeps outdated inventory and control ideas and refuses to admit the franchise is now more action-adventure than survival horror. Don’t let the negatives fool you though – it’s still one of the best balls-to-the-wall co-op excursions you can buy.

It’s one of the best looking games on the market, has impeccable presentation and wonderfully campy voice acting (this time, intentionally), a strong plot that brings back a handful of classic characters and, most of all, it’s just plain fun. Whether it’s padding slowly down a dim concrete hallway, complete with flickering florescent lights and ominous blood-splattered walls, or running from a horde of crazed, zombie villagers, Resident Evil 5 delivers a truly engrossing survival horror experience.

Hardcore fans may be disappointed by the departure from the traditional survival-horror roots but trust me, the game delivers enough thrills that you probably won't care. [Apr 2009, p.68]
IGN
The creepy suspense of the earlier games has been replaced with an action-packed intensity that will instantly appeal to some gamers and disappoint others. As an action game, RE5 is a success, and there’s a wealth of replayability through item collection, weapon upgrades, score chasing and the unlockable Mercenaries mode. But this is no gentle nudge to the formula of the previous main RE games; it’s an evolution.

While it's occasionally hampered by outdated controls and problematic AI, it's the near-mandatory co-op and bombastic assault of visceral silliness that earns Resident Evil 5 its stripes. Sure, it might just be a shinier, snazzier retread of Resi 4 - and certainly, it lacks its forerunner's impressive sense of invention - but this is still big, dumb Grade A entertainment.

With a whole heap of content to unlock, including the brilliant Mercenaries mode (playable cooperatively off and online), a campaign that begs to be replayed and top of the line production values there's very little to be disappointed with.

It's hardly the dramatic revamp that RE4 was for the series, but it marks the first time that co-op play has been implemented. As a result, the overhaul makes it a good single-player game, but a great multiplayer one. Thanks to its persistent approach to weapon upgrades, it's well-suited to replay. It's a visually splendid game with gorgeous cinematics that evoke the same awe as previous games did in their time.

You'll get a lot more out of it than you do from typical games with no competitive multiplayer and while played cooperatively it really sings. It's lost a lot of what has made the franchise a pins-and-needles experience, but that sense of dread has been replaced with pure action that's hard to match.

It may be a different beast, but it’s still a whole lot of fun. Resident Evil still has the chops to rock our world. However, if Capom do decide to continue down this action-packed path they’ve begun, they’d better get their sh.t together when it comes to “run ‘n gun” gameplay mechanics.

It's not refined enough as an action game to contend with the likes of Gears of War, it's been usurped in the survival horror category by the stellar Dead Space, and it's such a deviation from the franchise's foundation that it's almost certain to alienate a large contingent of diehard fans.

A technically flawless, movie-like episode of the famous survival horror series, although this time the focus is on action and not survival or even horror. The game's representation of Africa and its inhabitants seems to be from the Colonial era and is therefore somewhat disturbing, detracting from the overall enjoyment. [Mar 2009]

Resident Evil 5 is a beautiful game with a super good co-op. The singleplayer is not as good as other games in the franchise and the real fans will miss the survival horror, which has been replaced by a lot of action.

It’s the crux of the gameplay that matters and Resident Evil 5 has chosen a path more brazen, more gung-ho than we imagined. The co-op campaign makes inviting a friend over for a double dose of zombie-extermination possible, and while this should get old, it doesn’t.

Resident Evil 5 is “only” an amazing game, a label that 90% of the third person shooters would want for themselves. The cooperative mode is just sensational and the story mode is filled with non-stop action. The huge amount of contents will make you forget the lack of any kind of innovation in its concept.

Despite shortcomings and trying to fit into impossibly large shoes, RE5 is an undeniably enjoyable game, especially with a friend. RE's age of survival horror is sadly laid to rest, but the 3rd-person action taking its place is still worth playing.

It manages to stay feeling fresh and thrilling all the way through to the final battle, and it looks absolutely incredible. The story is mostly well paced and told with cinematics of extremely high production value. While the co-op is not exactly game changing, it is a very welcome addition to the series and the game is definitely a lot more fun when played this way.

If Resident Evil 5 is a new flavor of game for the long-running franchise, it's also a strong, spicy one—with occasional chucks of co-op wasabi to goad your inner action hero into fits of running and gunning... albeit, not at the same time.

A very fun game that pays fan service to the faithful through its engaging, answer-filled story, and it modernizes the series through an amazing, cinematic presentation. Where the game seems to get bogged down is in its attempt to appeal to everyone. The hybridization of survival horror mechanics with action-shooter gameplay doesn't work out very well - making it suffer from the jack-of-all-trades syndrome.

While the developers' decision to copy elements from Resident Evil 4 make it feel less original (despite better visuals and a new location), you'll have a blast (especially with a buddy) but after waiting four years for a sequel, we expected better.

With its fixed inventories, imposing but predictable level and boss design, and occasionally wooden controls, this tweaked, tropical, co-operative remix of Resident Evil 4 is a game you'll either love or hate. We choose the former.

In too many ways this is identical to the last game. That's not necessarily a bad thing - "RE4" is one of the greatest games ever made because it rewrote the rules for action games, setting a template for everything from "Dead Space" to "Dark Sector." Because of that this is still a damn near essential purchase. It's just a shame that the lack of evolution means it occasionally feels like it's lagging behind the very competitors it inspired. [Mar 2009, p.80]
Total Video Games
The sheer emphasis on action, coupled with the dated gameplay mechanics and inability to show any advance beyond the Resident Evil 4 blueprint is possible to overlook if you're happy with state-of-the-art visuals and zombie slaying.

It is a great game, one that is a faithful update to a game that only four years ago attained universal acclaim, but in that time, things have changed and, for better and for worse, Resident Evil 5 has only made baby steps when compared to the giant leaps that its predecessor made, and because of this, won’t be getting near that perfect 10. The issues with A.I and the controls will put off some of the more fickle gamers, but for those of you who part with their £40, like an A.I controlled Sheva to a horde of zombies, you’ll find plenty here to get your teeth into – fans and newcomers alike.

Capcom's latest adventure focuses more on action than on horror and puzzle solving, but still manages to retain the classic Resident Evil feel. Some elements are baffling, such as the African setting and the fact that you have to stand still during battles and can't purchase ammunition, but overall this is a well-made game that deserves to be played. A bit more innovation wouldn't have hurt though.

Ultimately, if you're looking for a shooter similar to Gears of War, you'll find yourself sorely disappointed with Resident Evil 5. Despite people claiming that the control scheme makes for a more tense and frightening experience, I find that it only made for a more frustrating, limited, and redundant experience. I dislike gameplay mechanics being forced onto the gamer, and so I found myself disagreeing with Resident Evil 5's gameplay.

Ultimately, Resident Evil 5 shouldn't be looked at as a failure in the series, merely too ambitious, inconsistent and uneven. Earlier entries in the series benefited from their simplicity and focus, and while it's laudable for RE5 to try and include so much variety, perhaps a little more of the same ol' same ol' would have resulted in a slightly better game.

The teammate AI is painfully bad and it will go down as one of the biggest mistakes in video gaming history. To take you back to the painful train analogy from before, Resident Evil 5 is a train where the engineer is retarded and steals all your god damned ammo. Replace that engineer with a human and you'll have fun with the game.

Resident Evil 5 starts with bang. An original setting and zombies that are just waiting to get shot are a perfect start. But a soon as your surroundings changes from a beautiful African landscape to dark and boring industrial complex, the gameplay turns a bit sour and transforms into a standard action game. An action game with the limitations of the horror genre. Resident Evil fans are probably dying to know how the story unfolds, but gamers with little knowledge of the previous games will find it nothing more than an average action game.

To avoid the risks while working on an expensive next-gen sequel to Resident Evil 4, Capcom recycled the previous game. The developers moved the action from Spain to Africa, replaced Leon Kennedy with Chris Redfield, brought back Albert “Duke Nukem” Wesker as the main baddie, added co-op, and rested. Look past the pretty graphics, and you will see a shameless clone.

Resident Evil 5 is mired in poor design decisions that drag down the experience and render single-player campaign a tedious exercise in working around the game. It’s frustrating to see a game that I so looked forward to playing and carried with it such potential, sabotage itself in so many ways. Compared against the ambition of games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Assassin’s Creed; Resident Evil 5 seems timid, unwilling to move out of its comfort zone. It’s a shame.

Grant Z gave it a10:
Resident Evil 5 is the perfect survival horror, many people reading this won't think it is scary. I think it is, sometimes. I got attacked with my friend with a chainsaw, and we both sat there screaming. It was the funniest thing ever. Graphics are amazing. And Sheva is the perfect partner. Also towards TYLER H, a loser. The story is epic, it follows on from REmake, and completely misses out outbreak and 4, mainly cos their stories were crap. The story had enough twists, and introduced Jill Valentine again, which was my favourite moment in a videogame EVER. Buy this, or your console will throw itself out your window in disgust.
James L. gave it a7:
Resi 5 is a good game but I thought that some of the levels were average in terms of gameplay and the tasks to be done. The graphics are excellent and despite what a lot of people say about " Why can't you run and gun?", it doesn't bother me. It makes it different. I finished the game quite easily on normal and I enjoyed it loads. There is plenty of replay value especially on the Mercenaries mode but I did feel a little let down on the size of the game but least it is quality even though the quantity of levels could have been higher.
Cody Baker gave it a9:
I was beyond satisfied with this stunning conclusion of the resident evil series. With more than 5 million copies sold within just a few months (surpassing sales of gears of war 1 & 2), most resident evil fans around the world consider this the best in the series (my favorite will always be the gamecube remake of the original and resident evil 4 but this one comes damn close). Although some people bitch about the controls because they expect too much out of the gameplay so they just give up like losers. Another thing a few people complain about is the story arc; this is ONLY because the people who do complain about it are confused, they're just dissapointed that this is the end of the series, or they're just too fucking retarded to understand the substance of this masterpiece and have NO taste in brilliant storytelling WHATSOEVER, they should TAKE THE TIME to actually get to know the story arc before judging it like inexperienced dumbasses. Me, my friends, and 5 million people around the world finally got to experience the end of the resident evil series and we enjoyed every plotline revolving around it. The graphics in this game are the best I've seen yet, Africa never looked so beautiful, and not to mention how incredibly realistic the characters looked, especially the environments. Also, not only is Sheva sexy as hell but she is useful; while only a few people complain how "useless" they think she is, that's only because when people play the game as Chris, they just stand there and expect Sheva to do all the work because they're just too damn lazy...or scared to do anything, she's there to HELP you, not do EVERY LITTLE THING for you. And another thing, the 3rd greatest villain in videogame history (behind ONLY Liquid Ocelot and Xahenort), Wesker, the main antagonist of the entire series is the ultimate badass and the final boss at the climax before the end; his evil is resolved as well as the main villain behind EVERYTHING that happened throughout the ENTIRE resident evil series, Lord Ozwell E. Spencer, appears in resinend evil 5 and finally dies at the hands of Wesker (this is Spencer's first, final, and ONLY appearence). Over all, I give this game a 9.5 out of 10, just about everything in this game is epic. The ONLY thing that I would consider a dissapointment is that my 3rd favorite villain in all my years of videogaming, Wesker, dies; as the resident evil series' main antagonist, I guess it had to be done, at the hands of both Chris and Sheva. Resident Evil 5 is a truly memorable experience.
Adam D gave it a6:
As an entry into the Resident Evil series, RE5 soars as its best effort, incorporating the gameplay of RE4 and upping the ante with HD graphics and a parter system that can be used in both single-user and online co-op modes. The storyline is more streamlined than previous entries, and the action starts from the first minute and never lets up. Even on "easy" or "normal" modes, expect great difficulty overcoming the hordes of zombies, lickers, and other slimy beasties that are clawing to have your entrails for dinner. Fans of the series will be cheering. However, any gamer not so willing to turn a blind eye to the many faults in RE5 probably won't agree. Control schemes taken verbatim from previous RE ports are best left to survival horror, and RE5 (no matter how badly it wants to be) is not survival horror. It is an action game, and as any thing trying hard to be something it's not, friction is obvious and frustration sets in quickly. The over-the-shoulder camera isn't suited for close-quarters combat, often leaving the avatar exposed to point-blank attacks on the left side that cannot even be seen. Far too often the game relies on QuickTime events instead of actual gameplay, but never telling you if you're watching a cutscene or playable stage, which often leads to you missing your button-mashing window and replaying the level from the last checkpoint. Your partner rarely seems helpful, and frequently runs off to other parts of the map only to die, causing both of you to go back to start. As well, your partner is allowed to revive you should you fall near death, but often they will be preoccupied or simply unresponsive and you die where you stand. Easily the worst trapping of "traditional" RE games is the limitations placed on your character's weapon/item carrying capacity, and RE5 is absolutely the worst of the bunch. Instead of an ever-expandable suitcase, a la RE4, your character and partner are limited to nine items each, which may sound like a lot, but it's far from it. When you take into account that each weapon takes up a spot, each box of ammunition takes up a spot, and your protective gear takes up a spot, it doesn't take very long into the game to get to the point where you are choosing between carrying a health aid or ammunition for your secondary weapon. I could go on for days about this game's faults, but the most unfortunate thing is that most of them seem intentional on Capcom's part to uphold the "tradition" of the series. Well, the series has always had some terrible aspects to it, and tradition alone is no logical reason to keep what could be a killer app mired in poor gameplay and design. Rent this one, folks. I beat it in three days, and have no desire to try it again.
Chris L gave it an8:
I have never played any other Resident Evil games before, but I know that they're usually horror games. Unlike what I expected, this game is not horrific at any point, yet very bloody with lots of gore. I've only tried this game in co-op and it's actually pretty fun. There are a few flaws that really annoys you in the gameplay. For example, the inventory of items you can carry around is very limited. Even the ammunition takes up place of the 9 spots you have in it. So throughout the game (probably except for the beginning levels), you find yourself unable to grab items because you're out of room even if you have a partner who can carry it for you. Another flaw is that during "aim mode", you can't move. Now that I think of it, you can't move if you're doing an action not just shooting. You can't move when reloading, you can't move when healing, etc. It really slows down the gameplay and makes your character REALLY slow. Although the game does have a bit of challenge at times. Now for the storyline. It's complete crap. It's about these two people try to stop a villain from taking over the world. I've seen that billions of times and I'm tired of it. The story can't grab the gamer's feelings into it. Even if the main character dies, no one will care. The lines of the story is very corny and awkward at times. The two main characters are always asking: "What the hell is this?", "What the hell is going on?", "What is this place?". It gets boring after awhile. And all that garbage about if this whole thing is worth fighting for, I fought all the "zombies" and I still don't know. In the end, this game is extremely fun if you have a friend you could tag along with. Otherwise, you might as well go read book.

I picked this up £10 cheaper than the RRP and I am content with my purchase. It's definitely not the best in the series in terms of raw gameplay and innovation, but it's not a bad game either like some have suggested. Though I have to admit the addition of online/splitscreen co op has saved Capcom from embarrassment due to the fact it's pretty much the same as RE4 but with better graphics. The controls really aren't as bad as people make out, either. The only conflict with regards to that is the default mapping, where run is (x) and turning the right analogue stick (seeing as you use your right hand for both). I haven't changed the controls yet but I think I would be better off if run was one of the top buttons (like L1 or R1). I am also one of the dislikers of having to stop and aim/shoot especially giving that I have played so many games in the last 2-3 years where running and shooting is common. I agree with one of the critics that pointed out that Capcom have tried to keep some old fundamentals but have also tried some new stuff which I find a little baffling. I have only played co op mode but overall it was a nice experience and requires some team play (exchanging items with one another and correspondence of puzzles) so I believe an 8/10 is well justified.

This is just not a good game, my opinion. Its a complete copy of RE4, it just has HD graphics now. I liked RE4, it was fun, challenging, and had alot of good scares. 5 doesnt have anything. Graphics are the only thing getting points here. You fight the exact same zombies from 4 in this one. The aiming system is garbage. Who in the hell can't walk and shoot? I know everything is copied from 4, but at least 5 could have changed it up alittle; come on Capcom. The enemies come at you too fast and are too strong now for the dated aiming system. Plot is weak. Having a partner is just a pain in the ass as your have to supply them with ammo continuously, which they'll just waste anyways. Co-op with a friend was a good idea, but it wasnt fun. This game isn't fun... it sucks. Why are there so many high scores? I dont get it. I love Dead Space, its one of my favorite horror games. This doesnt come close. Perhaps RE5 is too soft and tame for me.
