Summary
Guitar Hero Smash Hits takes the most exciting, recognizable and fun to play music from genre-defining titles Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which were previously available for guitar-only in-game play, and delivers them as a compelling and dynamic full band experience. Featuring 48 master recordings, Guitar Hero Smash Hits delivers exciting online and offline gameplay modes including Band Career and 8-player "Battle of the Bands,: which allows two full bands to compete head-to-head online. Players' rock n' roll fantasies turn to realities as they create their rocker, compose original music and share it with the world through the innovative Music Studio, GHTunesSM and robust Rock Star Creator gameplay modes first introduced in Guitar Hero World Tour. The tracklist includes: Killer Queen (Queen), I Love Rock N Roll (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts), Bark At The Moon (Ozzy), Them Bones (Alice in Chains), Killing in the Name (Rage Against The Machine), Message In A Bottle (The Police), Carry On My Wayward Son (Kansas) Free Bird (Lynyrd Skynyrd), I Wanna Rock (Twisted Sister), Nothin But A Good Time (Poison), Barracuda (Heart), Through the Fire and Flames (DragonForce). It would be a tough buy decision for a series veteran, but is a more than recommended acquisition for those who want to jump into the music genre.

I can only recommend this title to Guitar Hero enthusiasts that feel the band side of their collection is sorely missing the tracks included with this release. Everyone else out there could just as easily hold out for Guitar Hero 5, or wait for Smash Hits to hit the bargain bin or used section of their favorite game store.

Despite a few niggles with the note structure changes and the nagging feeling that this could have all been DLC, Greatest Hits is still a lot of fun.

Sound good? Then you’ll be in heaven with this new pack, especially if you bought Guitar Hero Metallica and have the dual bass pedals going. If these seem a little tired to you or you don’t want to pay for the whole collection, maybe just hold off and see if these make their way into the online shop eventually.

Guitar Hero: Smash Hits brings all the components of the last five Guitar Hero-games, but doesn’t bring enough big to be called Smash Hits. It is a step back on visuals compared to the other Guitar Hero-games. However, the songs are good, so that is the only reason the game don’t get a bad grade.

Guitar Hero: Smash Hits is the definition of "milking". Sure, the setlist is great, and if you've somehow never played these tracks before, they're a ton of fun.

Mr.Z gave it a7:
Cash-In alert! This has to be one of the laziest Guitar Hero releases i've seen yet. It's titled "Smash Hits", yet it contains so-called "Smash Hits" like: "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Barracuda" and "Cherry Pie". Don't get me wrong! Those are pretty good songs, but for a "Smash Hits" compilation, let alone on a super popular and well known franchise like "Guitar Hero", it just doesn't cut it. In fact, half of the "Smash Hits Setlist" is not even worth it. The only things that saves this game from a waste of cash is the Full band support, further use of the World Tour engine and gameplay mechanics, and a majority of songs got a small (But worth the change) makeover for the note charts. Not to mention, some songs are easier to play. For example: "Through The Fire And Flames" is actually much more possible on Expert, and certain solos on songs like "Round and Round" and "Bark at the Moon" are easier to well..Solo, thanks to the game mechanics. Otherwise, that's about it. A ton of Guitar Hero fanatics and addicts will have already played a majority of these titles (On Guitar/Bass mode, anyways.), resulting in a "Been there, done that" scenario more than once. So if you're itching to play a few former Guitar Hero songs on a brand new engine, either alone or with a full band, this is okay for a few nights rent, or a purchase if you're a Guitar Hero addict or whatnot. But i'd advise "Guitar Hero: Metallica" or "Guitar Hero: World Tour", for your money. But that's just me. --Mr.Z --TL;DR Version-- Pros: --Older GH songs on a newer game engine with all the newer, flashier mechanics. --Full Band Support. --Some songs got a note chart revamp. Cons: --Half of the setlist is a "Been there, done that" scenario, and to mention; NOT SMASH HITS. --Unless you're a GH addict who wants full band support and what not, this really isn't worth the full price tag.
