Summary

It’s a co-op survival horror game. Up to 6 players in online co-op mode, or just you, on your own, playing the Solo mode. The aim - cleanse each area of zombies, in waves, until you get to the last one. The Big One. The Patriarch. Then exterminate him, too. Actually, they aren’t "zombies". They are the left-over "specimens" from a cheap and dirty government program to clone soldier-monsters. The basic ones will just munch on your arm and try to disembowel you. The bigger ones were the first ones they tried arming. Nothing much. Just a chainsaw or a blade for starters. They had just got on to the chain gun and rockets when the government tried to secretly shut down their secret program. But, in the typical way these things go, the program didn’t want to be shut down. The specimens got loose. No-one was left alive to turn off the specimen-cloning equipment. And now they are running amok. Well, some of them are running amok. Others are shambling amok or even jumping amok, but you get the idea. The police were sent in, but that wasn't even a challenge for the specimens. The first army units hadn't been warned what to expect. The screams of its got a bloody chainsaw!" over the radios probably didn’t do much for morale, as whole units were chewed up. Quite literally, in some cases, of course. And now, there is just you. And a few friends. The few survivors from the first police and army units thrown in. Of course, you can’t tell anyone anything, because that would be a breach of the Official Secrets Act 1911, 1920, 1989. And that would be a disciplinary offense. So just get in there and do your bit for Queen and Country. Zombies. Lots of them. Big ones, little ones. Armed and Dangerous. JUST MAKE THEM ALL GO AWAY! [Tripwire]

If you've enjoyed zombie games of the past and want to see a different take on what cooperative zombie horror games should be like, then I think you will enjoy Killing Floor too.

For the price, fun and challenging enough. Except for Patriarch. [July 2009]

We were already armpit-deep in the dead, but we've still found room for more slaughter on the Killing Floor. [Issue#24, p.50]

Killing Floor is a strong game in its own right. The core gameplay is rock solid and has lasting replayability. The variety and detail of weapons are outstanding.

Having spent many hours playing Killing Floor, I am delighted to report that it's really, really enjoyable - sometimes even more so than the amazing Left 4 Dead.

Long-term value is one of the many deciding factors in purchasing this game. It’s already receiving more content, it’s cheap, and it’s really good about killing stuff. Buying Killing Floor is easily one of the best purchasing decisions you can make this year.

An enjoyable kill-a-thon then, though sits unsteadily alongside the now-classic Valve title. [Oct 2009, p.98]

Tripwire Interactives Killing Floor is what you would expect of a polished mod, but doesn’t exceed expectations as a retail game. It’s good, but unfortunately far from perfect. A nice addition to the survival-horror genre though, and it has an attractively cheap price tag.

While the single-player experience is pretty much non-existent and there are still a large number of bugs that have to be contended with, there's enough of a foundation here for players to enjoy. Hop online and kill monsters for Queen and Country.

For those of you looking to train hard for the zombie apocalypse long predicted by Max Brooks, and not have to deal with any silly cinematic conventions doing so, Killing Floor might very well be the sort of thing you need to sharpen your training regimen.

PC Games (Germany)

Once a mod now a game on its own, Killing Floor confronts the player with hordes of undead minions threatening his character’s life. While being independent enough of zombie-shooter-king Left 4 Dead with features like sealing doors, character perks and weapon stores, the game itself offers little variety and a flawed AI.

Solid, workman-like zombie slaughter, with a strong hint of amateur mod-making love and enthusiasm. [Aug 2009, p.72]

Hectic coop multiplayer game offers no story but straight–forward nonstop mayhem in stylish locations. Rich and balanced equipment makes the multiplayer clashes all the fun. Chainsaw included! [July 2009]

Eurogamer

It isn't perfect. It's not the sort of game that future generations will gather to celebrate, linking hands and singing sad songs of fond remembrance. It is, however, clever, boisterous, faintly silly and relatively cheap.

Game Over Online

Ultimately though, the sort of plotless killing gets old, or at least it did for me. L4D felt like you were trying to go somewhere and do something. KF fails in that respect and instead feels like just a bunch of deathmatch games with the computer controlling one side.

Killing Floor isn’t the most polished first person shooter on the market. However, it does offer one of the better co-op experiences, with excellent shooter mechanics, intense action and a good community that will keep you coming back for more.

GameStar

If you can't get enough of killing Zombies and co-operative play, Killing Floor may be a cheaper alternative to Left 4 Dead. It doesn't come close though and it's obvious that Killing Floor once was a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004.

There are only a handful of official maps to play , although each one is substantial in size. [Aug 2009, p.77]

Eurogamer Italy

Killing Floor is not perfect but its deficiencies are strictly connected to the graphics and details and it's not a problem considering the final result. If you are looking for an interesting and cheap game to put in your collection, Tripwire's last work could be a good choice.

Ironically enough, this might be one to keep your eye on as the modding community gets a hold of it. Despite the flaws, this game has enough potential to end up standing out.

Killing Floor is mediocre on almost every level. The game may be cheap to buy but that doesn't take away the fact that game comes short almost every end. You can have some cooperative fun with this shooter, but this means you will have to ignore a lot of its shortcomings and for many gamers that will be too much of a pain.

Absolute Games

Even talented designers couldn’t have saved Killing Floor. The game is so low-budget that it evokes pity instead of nostalgia. The visuals aren’t bad for an Unreal Engine 2 game, but they are a far cry from modern shooters. Threepenny lighting and jerky animation are the worst horrors you’ll see here.

What Our Users Said

Moo M gave it a9:
After played over 100 hours within the first weed, i would have to agree with the other user comments on the subject of reviewers not knowing how to rate games. While it does get "repetitive" there are a number of ways to enhance your playing experience. From different guns, to different positions, this game has hours and hours of fun playing time! Get together with 5 of your friends and try out different perks and see which gun suits you best. Great Friday night fun!

Hugo Z gave it a5:
Killing floor is a good game for about a week, but then it gets dull. Not even more perks can overcome this. It's just the truth. Perhaps if the modding community gets their hands on it, it might just improve. But until the time that a group of excellent modders come, it will be a dull game. And now the "pay for extra skins" rubbish. It's what really ruined the game for me. I didn't buy killing floor so I can play a game which uses a "pay for more" policy. The sole reason I bought this game is because of it's incredibly cheap price tag. I would have been REALLY unhappy if it was the full 50 euros (steam rips us EU customers off, so it's 50 EUROS for us, yes).

Lord S. gave it a10:
I normally never bother writing reviews for games on sites like this. But I felt that some things had to be said. Don't listen to the idiotic critics. They probably spent an hour with the game after it released and jumped to a conclusion after that. Also, some of their score %s seem quite low for the amount of good things they say about the game. In the past... almost half a year since this game released, I have put hundreds of hours into it. Literally around 10x the length of time that L4D held my interest. It is really fun, the guns handle much better (there's ironsights!) and there are much more of them, more enemy types, TONS of user created maps, and, best of all, the game is challenging on the higher difficulties without being cheap about it like L4D is. If you're a skilled player you can survive on your own in most situations, instead of getting pinned down by a hunter/smoker the second your other team mates die. It's $20, just buy it and play it for a few days and judge for yourself.

Geo W gave it a9:
This game was simply amazing, i have spent hours playing it, why? Because of its simple addictive game play that keeps me coming back for more. And of course im going to compare it to L4D, L4D has great graphics, great sound, but it only has 4 characters and is extremely linear. Whereas Killing Floor as about 10 or so characters, it has several levels that are not linear, both made by the developers and made by the players. L4D only has about 8 weapons total, Killing Floor has so many weapons, but im to lazy to name them all, hah. KIlling Floor is a great game, and for the $20 price tag, it is just a better buy for anyone looking for some good ol' co-op shooting action.

Joseph C gave it a10:
This game was in progress before Left 4 Dead, I am stating this, as it has Special infected like 'The Boomer','The Hunter' and they also have the screamer... Although Left 4 Dead has the best graphics of the two, this game has the Great Gameplay and Strong Teamwork, and Sweet graphics. This game is not rinse and repeat, as there are custom maps available to make, Steam achievements, and Constant Patches. Soon, there is to be new Gameplay modes (Maybe playing as the zombie!) It's a damn lot of entertainment for a little price of £14.99 and the cheap character pack, containing 4 new characters is worth a buy too. Note: This game has Perks, which are like levels, so you actually have something to aim for :D. I recommend this to all audiences who enjoy gore and blood and Zobie Slaing FPS.

Oto Mo gave it a0:
Overly boring and repetitive game, it's all disguised under the facade of leveling up, netplay is somewhat better but it's hard to find a dedicated teamplay as there is no requisite for it built it, just follow your own path and shoot everything in sight until the shop opens, rinse and repeat.

Jason P gave it a10:
This game is an over looked gem. The weapon physics are much better than other games in the genre. The atmosphere created by Tripwire suits the game perfectly. This game is a bargain as far as value goes for the price.
