Vote Now!The average user rating for this TV Show is 7.3 out of 10 (based on 249 Votes).

The creators of John from Cincinnati did some things that automatically got it in trouble with some viewers -- not the least of which is that it appears that it might be about the second coming of Christ. I would have rated it lower for not being clever enough to handle the difficulties in the story in a more acceptable way -- but the acting was so good, I just couldn't compromise. gays, christians, jews, conservatives, liberals, etc will all find problems ahead of time with John, which is too bad because it is wonderful story telling.

Martin S gave it a5:
I realize David Milch has his own writing style but frankly I'm getting sick of his circuitous routes to the simplest of points.

G A. gave it a9:
Hbo is killing me with the canceling of my favotite shows. This show rocked. You never knew what was coming & I loved it for that reason. Who wants some cookie cutter script with all the answers given 2 you @ the end?

Mark W. gave it a9:
A rare gem that deserved another season (or three). JfC reveals more with each viewing, so it is not shocking that many critics were dismissive after a single viewing of the first episode. The show was very smart and complex. View the whole series once it is out on dvd and you will be richly rewarded. Ed O'Neill stands out in a talented and spot-on cast.

Tammy L. gave it a10:
JFC is the best show yet!!! Shame they are not going to have season 2! HBO... I'm dropping my subcription the first day of OCT

Marc P. gave it a0:
As satisfying as a Chinese crossword puzzle wish I had time to learn the language of Milchanese.

Henry N. gave it a0:
this show wasn't smart or complex, it was an embarrassing testament to how dumb the tv audience has gotten. Milch's politics and screwy beliefs in faith healing and miracles served up like some Universal Truth. Throw in a few magic tricks and some will mistake confusion for complexity. Only psychotics would think a show about some upcoming genocide and apocalypse is "uplifting." Think about THAT.

Harold S. gave it a1:
A Milch mix with Nunn nuts, is a total waste of time. The Deadwood type talk is simply out of place; just so ostentatious I'm pleased that it was dropped from HBO.

conor m gave it a10:
i thought this show was so incredible and it was one of the few shows out there where you just waited for the next episode.its an awesome show, bring it back!

Lisa B gave it a10:
I loved it and so did all my friends. It draws you to think which is uncomfortable for people who like things in a nice neat box.

Michael M. gave it a10:
I live in IB and thought the show was incredible. These critics are mouthbreathing idiots.

Amy M gave it a10:
The critics don't know what they're talking about. John from Cincinnati was addictive, and wonderful. Please bring it back, HBO!

Barry T gave it a10:
10++++ I LOVE thisshow! Quirky, strange, mesmerizing, with the richest cast of characters, wonderful subplots--and the big question. I couldn't wait until the next show, then the next season. I watched each episode on On Demand at least twice to pick up all the subtleties. Now I just found out HBO cancelled it. HBO, PLEASE reconsider! Please put John fro Cincinnati back on the air.

Ted s. gave it a10:
the show is awesome,PERIOD. We need a little out of the norm in relief of the daily grind.

barbara t. gave it a10:
Love it! nothing like guessing and watching the next episode to find out you're wrong!! Good show.....great cast!

martin c. gave it a10:
revelatory and exeptional, and, of course, now cancelled.

Edward P gave it a10:
Best show I've ever seen. love the story and characters and especially the mystery. I t doesn't treat the viewer like a moron having to explain what is happening. Probably ahead of it's time but hopefully it will stick around.

Judy gave it a10:
I really hope this show continues. Despite the degenerate society portrayied there were some signs of the basic goddness of humanity shining forth. More please!

Mike gave it a1:
The premier was promising. That was the highlight of the series. David Milch thinks he's modern-day Shakespeare. If it's not bad enough he uses 960 words to express each sentence, it's written in such superfluous word-wasting nonsensical existential bullshit, I just don;t give a shit about a single character that opens his or her mouth, except for the parrots. Each week drags on and on slower and slower, with 10 times more questions than answers about who these people are and what the hell they are doing, and more importantly, WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT THEM? Most of the episodes have absolutely NO plot advancement or resolutions whatsoever. Characters sleepwalk through the show dribbling out 60 second meaningless sentences like a child pissing in his diapers running down his leg and on our shoes. I am so sick of every character's self-indulged vacant paralysis I can;t even stand to watch them, especially the perpetually hyper-angry Sissy who spews a river of shit on anyone and everyone for no reasopn whatsoever. She has one speed and one dimension: EXTREME BITCH. I wish they would all drown together, except the parrots.

Reed H gave it a10:
One of the best TV shows ever! Understood what it was all about from the first episode, and grew to love it after the mesmerizing and poetic Episode 6. Every character grows from self-absorbed and clueless at the beginning to caring and self-aware at the end, all thanks to John ,who is somehow beyond human; and the show was fun too. Sorry to see it go.

Lorrie S gave it a10:
very different and I love it.

Ted B gave it a0:
How in the world can so many people give this show a 10? And half of you that rated it that high admit you don't have a clue as to what the damn thing is all about! Somehow I managed to force myself to watch this show until the very end out of a sense of devotion to HBO and David Milch, but, oh my god, what a waste of time! And that had to be one of the worst endings for a supposedly edgy show ever. It smacked of "Let's Get This Over With." The only thing it was missing was a group hug while they were all floating above the ground singing Kumbaya. Yes, there was some solid acting and direction, but the writing was straight out of a 5 day meth-bender. What, did they think we would be duped into buying the phony metaphysical subtext? More like metafarcical. And please don't try and tell that was the point or I will barf all over my keyboard. They didn't have a point. This wasn't just style over substance, it was gibberish over nonsense. I guess this is what successful writers and producers do once they have enough money to get coked out of their minds. And people gave it a 10? I give it a 0 in the name of sanity. If I could have given it a -10, I would have. The just punishment for HBO, should they chose to renew this series, would be to force them to watch it over and over again without their bongs and stash of coke.

sean h gave it a10:
Fantastic show, great cast. I will miss it. Like Deadwood, it was rich in potential and possible story lines.

Brian S. gave it a0:
This show was a hot, steaming Turd - Milch was definitely off the wagon on this one. Not in the same category as Deadwood, The Soprnos or even Carnivale. Now when is Bill Maher back on?

richard g gave it a10:
love the show, know lots of others complain about the pace, but i actually like the meandering. the character interaction is fun, and the slow paced early revelations with the quicker revelations towards the end (though understandably tough for some to stomach) was worth the investment of my time.

Stephanie K. gave it a10:
I love this show. Am completely addicted. It's a little out there but the ensemble is incredible, talk about worth the time. I am a busy executive with 2 kids and a hubby, I travel a lot and am completely spellbound by this show.

steve m. gave it a10:
great cast screwy plot just what television needs

barbara k. gave it a10:
Seeing HBO cancelled the best show on tv my comment is futile how dare they cancel John from cincinnati..read the reviews and not surprised the Boston Globe & the Christian Science Monator didn't GET John..they have no imagination in any of their writings.

Rich T. gave it a10:
Great Show. Boston Globe knucklehead cannot comprehend the gritty, almost unbathed feel of the show. But what do you expect, he works for the Globe.

les m gave it a0:
what a load of crap. I watched every episode hoping that it would make sense eventually. I watched it because it was by Milch I think he must be back on the sauce

Mike B. gave it a10:
Are you people crazy this is the most innovative program ever. Who cares if we understand it . It leaves it open to everyone imagination. I will cancel my HBO if you cancel john. We are hooke please give iot one more season before you give up on it. Please Please Please.

JAmie M. gave it a10:
Love this show so mucho!!!

Brandy C. gave it a10:
absolutely wonderful show Im going to put this page as a myspace bulletin so everyone i know can vote for it as a 10

Sharon R. gave it a10:
I love this show. I like the fact that they have not given up what is going on. every monday me and my 3 grown kids watch together, even my 4 year old grandson loves the surfing scenes. I love everything about the show, because i am not sure what going on my mind is thinking up all sorts of ideas. Please give me back John, and the whole rest of the gang. Please Please give another season.

royce t. gave it a2:
Ugh. What exactly was that?

Steve J. gave it a10:
This show does exactly what it's supposed to do, leave me guessing and wanting more!

Glenn R gave it a10:
Great show. I only wish the critics were a bit more hip. Good shows like this don't seem to last very long in this country...most folks don't enjoy using their brians, especially while being entertained. I'll keep my fingers crossed for JFC.

Bob v. gave it a1:
I just don't like the premise, the acting, or anything else. I did not really like deadwood either. This show has way to much drama for my taste and wacky(lame) surrealism.

jon h gave it a10:
best show on tv. if you are stupid, you won't like it.

T G gave it a1:
All the awful self-indulgence that Deadwood displayed, plus god-awful dialog, a dumb plot, and poor acting from talented actors.

eric g. gave it a3:
What the hell was that? Many of the great elements (including actors) of 'Deadwood', but without a coherent plot. While I saw every episode, at some point roughly a month ago, it dawned on me that the emperor's just not wearing any clothes.

Tim M gave it a1:
Tried to like this show and give it a chance, but its impossible - finally put the last nail in the coffin last night - just couldn't even get thru the whole show. Can't believe Deadwood was given up for this crap. And we're supposed to accept the Deadwood actors in this new series? All they did was take the hooker clothes off Trixie - her personality is exactly the same - its insane! what the heck is up with HBO - why abandon such great shows like Carnivale, Deadwood, & Rome and feed us this junk - its about time to cancel my HBO - all the reasons to keep paying for it are gone. Shame on you HBO

lynne n. gave it a0:
Hate it - it drags on and on without making any sense - bring back Deadwood - but, if you want "Dead Wood" - that describes JFC.

LAURIE B gave it an8:
Ive watched since day 1 and still have no idea what its about, but cant stop watching.

R S. gave it a0:
Contrived and obtuse

Mary D. gave it a10:
any show that can evoke so much emotion during a 1-hour time slot is genius. People who dont like it are afraid to stretch thier brains imaginations.

Arlo P. gave it a10:
The best show on TV. It fills a very needed gap in the standard line up. I have watched each episode at least 6 times. Without ths show I would stop my HBO service.

K N. gave it a10:
Simply the best show ive seen on HBO for a long while. You will only fully appreciate the show if you follow the series. The entire series sucks you into a world with vivid characters and a very powerful religious tie in. I am still trying to figure out johns statements and how they relate to the basic story involving the coming together of the cast. I do look forward to the second season! If you dont like to think this show isnt for you.

Glen O. gave it a3:
Well the first season is over and if anyone has a clue what this series is about please post it! I'm a super fan of sci-fi and obscure philosophy and theology and just about anything outside the box. I first thought that this could be something like Heinlein's 'Stranger in a Strange Land' or something on that kind of grand scale. By the end of season one I want to throw the remote through my TV screen because I don't even know which character I care about less! HBO is going to screw us with this series just like they did with Carnivale when it failed in the ratings. We never got to see the ending for Carnivale! Lucky Louie was another great comedy for adults who can handle adult themes. We got screwed again with that cancellation. Since I now know less than ever about John from Cincinatti, my guess is we won't have to worry about this ridiculous series for much longer. Thank God for Entourage! Don't get too attached to JFC. Most HBO fans are very tolerant, but even us Cable heads need a plot to follow. Looks like Sundays evenings will be a NetFlix evening at my house.

J M. gave it a10:
This is a show worth investing in !!! How thrilling it is to not feel patronized by Mr. Milch and the other writers. I am so looking forward to more episodes. It's quite a ride- one we have really enjoyed dropping into.

Ralph M. gave it a0:
Characters who, with few exceptions, suffer from minimal to serious brain damage and limited vocabulary, a plot that meanders, and a core mystery that is banal. Sad for the actors. "Shaun will be gone"? Best thing that could happen to him.

Ted J gave it a9:
Lots of mysterious fun. The cast is hilarious! I was a huge Deadwood fan, and love JFC as well--I don't know what other Deadwood fans are complaining about--it's a *different* show; get it?

anna k. gave it a1:
Painful to watch.

John gave it a10:
Insane, witty, and vulgar. I have never loved a show more when I have no clue of what's happening.

Alex O gave it a9:
Aasuming the story sucks, this gets a 7 out of the gate for it's originality and courage.

Tim R gave it a10:
I find the show very entertaining and thought provoking. I look forward to it every week. Great job.

l MC gave it a10:
Thought Provoking, classic milch elevated diction dialogue that makes me laugh or knit my brow. Yes infuriatingly confusing, but that's a nice change from who is going to get whacked this week.

SKB gave it a10:
This show is raw and "in your face." I like that. It's a refreshing change from the usual mindless fair that doesn't challenge in any way. I hope HBO picks it up for another season, at least. Not being able to get to fully understand and know these characters, would be a real shame.

Elaine A. gave it a2:
This is farb from a replacement for Six Feet Under and Sopranos. The dialogue is strange and the story boring so far. The acting seems sub par. In the last episode I wanted to turn it off and watch State of Mind after 10 minutes but stayed tune. The deal with Cissy running around looking for Shawn was boringand pathetic. Get a stroy soon or you will lose everyone.

dirk R. gave it a10:
I love this existentialist crock pot. Convoluted plotlines, unnatural dialogue, the lot. The surfing ethos pervades this show, at points it builds to the sublime. Oh, and Johnny Appleseed (theme music) is a fantastic match for the show.

Jessica J. gave it a3:
It started off with such promise but never seems to get going. Too contrived after a while. Still, it's addicting.

[Anonymous] gave it a0:
I totally agree with the Boston Globe reviewer, it was like being trapped in your seat watching pretentiously bad theatre. Awful!

Michael M. gave it a10:
Great show

Jim W. gave it a10:
Every character is a gem. I can hardly wait until Sunday night!!

T D gave it a10:
I am hooked! It seems to me that the people who will not like this show are the ones who are not able to put the very small details together to form the story. You have to work to find the answers for the questions they raise, but that's what gets me hooked to a show. The writing is a 10. The character development is a 10. The environments are a 10. Just a great show once you get to the core of the story.

bat gave it a2:
shame on david milch!!!!!!

HI M gave it a10:
Intellectually challenging and quite a refreshing change from Pavlovic shows such as "Grey's Anatomy"

Bob N gave it a10:
I was the biggest Sopranos fan and was very upset it was over, until I started watching JFC. This is the most creative, deep, but also very entertaining show I have ever watched on TV. Great job!

Ed T gave it a10:
TV does not get any better than this. Those giving a zero rating probably watch CSI 3 times a week!

Kurt W gave it a10:
A fascinating show. I dare anyone to watch John's speech in the Motel Court Yard (Episode 6) and not be hooked. For those who are dismissive, check out the insightful fan discussion of the show at: http://www.thesnugharbormotel.com/index.php There are many fansites, but this one has the best and most active fan base interaction, all of which nly makes the viewing experience so much more addictive. Give JFC it's due...it is only hated because it has to fill the Sopranos' shoes and then after a crappy finale. That's a tough chore...give it a chance because the show is fabulous.

gloria c gave it a10:
Captivating and wonderful on every level...finally, something worth watching!

Julien C gave it a9:
It's interesting to read these comments. People either hate it or love it. Personally, I grew up in a beach town in Southern California so it rings a bell. I love this show. The plot and characters are captivating and raw. It's addictive.

helene e gave it a2:
Watching it is painful. It hurts my head. What the hell was the zombie green corpse that John brought out into the yard in that one episode? After that, the show lost it for me.

Paul G gave it a10:
Compulsive viewing.

Meredith K gave it a9:
I think the critics needed to give this a few more episodes. Many a good series started off unpopular but grew in popularity with time. Remember "Cheers," for example. The cast is brilliant, and the implications delicious. J from C = J.C. And I'll be damned if surfers don't appear to walk on water. MK

Thom L gave it a9:
The more I watch the more I like it. I have a DVR so I have watched most episodes several times. I think if you like LOST you should be here too, but I notice that I'm the only one in my household who likes it.

Brooke gave it a0:
Worst show on cable ever. HBO should be ashamed of this crap. Please put us out of our misery and cancel it now!

Renee gave it a0:
This show is horrible. It makes no sense, characters are stiff, the script is junk. Don't bother watching unless you want it to put you to sleep!

Daniel N gave it a0:
Worst show ever produced on HBO. HBO has given too much freedom to David Milch, who seems to think every word he touches turns to gold. I hope HBO quickly cancels this spectacle, or else they may lose too many viewers to afford it for a season two. David Milch is done in my book. He abandoned "Deadwood" for this BS. Wow, what an idiot!

Ally N gave it a0:
If this show doesn't bring Milch back to reality (he is not the God of TV), then I don't know what will. I'm aggrivated at HBO for letting such crap take up time on their network. After all, HBO had produced such great series before, and I can't recall one that is as terrible as this one. My husband and I have watched the episodes in agony, waiting for something to make us look forward to next week's show. But we're done, not watching any more. A great show will hook you in an episode, a good show will hook you in two or three, but this piece of junk will make you want to watch Desperate Housewives and cancel HBO.

jeb h gave it a10:
I love this show!!!

jeff gave it a9:
this show was interesting from the first episode. After the first show i was trying to figure out what was supposed to be going on, after the second i gave up and just kept watching. Now i can't stop. Every episode makes me look forward to the next. If you want to start watching know maybe you can get caught up through " on demand". I admit that there was a slow episode or two but it lust leads to the next show which ends up being great.

chris r gave it a1:
This show is a mess... I like strange shows, but this is just horrible. The acting is crap, the script is crap... What was HBO thinking?

Rick B gave it a10:
JFC is unlike anything else on HBO, much less on network television. The characters are rich and the writing is mesmerizing. My appreciation with the work of Milch and company grows deeper each week. If you're looking for something formulaic with a linear plot line and stock characters, a la the much heralded 24, then look elsewhere. But if you're willing to spend the time and attention this show demands, and you're willing to let the show wash over you with each repeated viewing yielding more depth of enjoyment, you will not be disappointed. If you're looking for a show about surfing, go watch Endless Summer. This is something else entirely. If you get lost, check out the posts on HBO.com. Much insight there. In summary, I love this show for how it makes me feel, and I'm hard pressed to tell you exactally why. Watch it. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

Ken gave it a2:
I tried to like this but who could. The characters are hateful, cheating, cursing unlikeable people who respond to situations that are so unreal. Hey I'm floating - grab a camera. Hey I'm not dead - I still just want to smoke and surf. Hey, there's this weird dude - let's invite him to follow us everywhere. Whatever, it's not a thinking person's series as it's hateful people do stupid things. I'll be watching reruns of the Sopranos before watching more of this.

April T gave it a9:
Fabulous show, well written and very well acted. Great dialouge and plot.

adam gave it a4:
I'm trying to hang in there...but "waiting for something to happen" is really starting to get old. The Deadwood speak is tiring and no longer interesting. I can't connect with anybody, because everything is too unrealistic. I was hoping for smoother zen-like transitions that explore life through surfing...Not so. They might as well wear period wigs and shoot in natural light...very grey, very very grey.

Bill B gave it a2:
i have watched this show all 5 episodes, mainly out of the inertia of plopping my old butt on the sofa at 9PM on Sundays to watch HBO- sort of rigor mortis from Sopranos days..... J from C has the worst dialogue i've ever seen in a show- did Bruce Greenwood quit already? how do you take the lead guy in a brand new series and shelve him for 2 or 3 episodes? and leave the lead to Rebecca D- who walks around looking dazed and confused with her cracking voice patterns. i've tried to like it, because the california beach town/ surfer theme is interesting, but this is really, really poorly executed. there are some HBO types who believed their own BS/ infallibility who will be looking for jobs soon

Mike C gave it a10:
Best show ever on HBO! For those who prefer to think instead of being spoon fed, this show is fantastic!. Amazing! July 23, 2007

Michael P gave it a10:
A different breed of TV. Fantastic show. You gotta let it roll over you slowly. Not like other shows. Give it a try and only watch episodes in order.

L Reiman gave it a2:
Very bizarre mess. No cohesion. While I watched Deadwood it was not my favorite despite being well done but J from C is just plain convoluted. Too many style mixes--too many disjointed subplots. Good luck trying to make sense out of it. I give up. Deadwood was better even in my book.

emily b gave it a10:
Just keeps getting better and I still don't understand it.

Stefan V gave it a9:
Absolutely brilliant. This show will go over many heads. Many will say, "Huh?" But it is a metaphysical wonderland - full of interesting ideas. But the best is the box of chocolate characters. Strong. Quirky. Developing. Almost like Noah brought together his animials - and instead of an Arc - ended up at a motel parking lot. I am so looking forward to this show every week! Rock on dudes!

Vera B gave it a10:
I just was lucky enough to catch it the 1st show and I've watched everyone of them 3 or 4 times each. They are GREAT! The show itself is interestibg, addicting and ful of on-going questions.

Donald A gave it a10:
The show is fantastic! It's complex and effective; I think the NYT reviewer missed the point -- shocking.

Frank S gave it an8:
I love querky. Is John an agel, devil, alien or an escaped experiement from a government lab. I don't know and really as long as they keep me feeling like I am exploring a new slightly out of reach parallel universe, I will watch. Want do you want Butchy? More JFC, of course.

Joyce gave it a10:
We LOVE this show! Can't get enough and would love to read blogs, what do others think. Stranger than strange, remember Twin Peaks? Who and what is John?

josh gave it a10:
it is the best, and most clever show i've seen on TV.. i'm hooked.

Gary T gave it a1:
This show is a failure. It lacks the honesty of the characters of Deadwood or the captivating mystery with in the story line of Carnival. I'm losing patents with the very slow story line development. This show won't make it. The character of John might be the second coming but, this show isn't.

Ryan B. gave it a10:
This show is amazing. It the best thing that HBO has done in a while.

gary a. gave it a2:
No more Deadwood.....No more Rome.....For THIS load of crap?!! Somebody tell me that this is a just a very bad dream!

Kevin F gave it a10:
Great show! Very Original!

Krista L. gave it a10:
My husband and I love this show. Ed ONeil is hysterical and mysterious. His character has been wonderfully developed into a complex person who is enormously involved with the story. Cissy is a trip, she is one crazy mom. The last 2 episodes have shown how much of an impact her mental instability has on the whole entire family. This last episode from 7/15 revealed a great deal of back story which was needed, but at the same time brought about many more questions. It showed us a couple of reasons why Cissy is such a "ball-buster" as quoted by Butchie. It dives into the disturbing details of Butchie and Cissy's relationship and digs a hole into the darkness of Butchie's heroine addiction. Needless to say, I hope that this show sticks around to answer the all the questions that come with watching it every Sunday.

karen gave it a5:
While this show keeps you tuned for the most part, its more like watching a train wreck. The character could have potential if they could complete a sentence without screaming at each other. I think Sissy is one of the worst characters with the "you moron" phrase in just about every sentence. Milch need to give the characters more depth so we can relate or sympathize or bond with at least one or more of them!!!

Mike L gave it a6:
It's addicting like a rubix cube. I don't have any idea what's going on, but I want to figure it out so I'll keep watching it. The acting is terrible and so is the plot. As soon as you think the series is about one thing, they come out of left field with a superpower or something. However, I can't stop watching it... not to entertain me, just because I have to figure out what's going on.

Jamie K. gave it a1:
I can't believe I have watched 5 episodes of this crap. I see from the comments already posted is that people either love it or hate it. It had the potential of being very interesting, yet it has take so long for something to take shape, I have lost interest. I can't really feel anything for any of these characters who are so screwed up. I wonder if enough people will watch for it to be picked up again. Now Flight of the Conchords....that is a show!

Nanette B. gave it a10:
This is my husbands favorite show. He isn't a TV watcher unless it has something to do with Football, but he never misses this show.

john s. gave it a10:
I love it, im tired of people comparing the Sopranos to it, the Sopranos is over...let it go already.

Jay J. gave it a0:
booooooooring

Kimbo S. gave it a9:
Most unique show I have seen in a long time. Characters seem really fresh and of course mysterious. You have never seen a show like this. I really hope the storyline develops and delivers. "I've got my eye on you"

C.B. gave it a6:
I was really interested through the first 4 episodes... now I'm just pissed

Brian F. gave it a9:
grows on you as you watch each new episode

Bob W gave it a0:
Just terrible. I keep watching because I simply cannot believe that the people at HBO could do something so pathetic, in fruitless anticipation of improvement. For this Deadwood was canceled? For this I would not cancel a beer commercial.

Aaron W. gave it an8:
Very strange but definitely intriguing. While the character development is great, I wish the plot would move forward a little more quickly so we can find out what the shows really is about.

Scott J gave it a10:
"John from Cincinnati" is wonderful show. Ed O'Neill steals the show with a great performance as the lonely OCD Bill.

Led Z. gave it a10:
Great TV. Mist be willing to wait for story line payoff but nothing else like it on TV and I mean that in a good way.

Keith R gave it a10:
Awesome Show

Rachel V gave it a10:
I love it! I ordered HBO just for this show.

Joan G gave it a9:
Very enjoyable. Quirky, mystical, thought-provoking, Good writing. I look forward to future episodes.

Arthur F. gave it an8:
Brilliant quirky touching

Dan C. gave it a10:
David Mitch and Kem Nunn have put together a truly unique and captivating show containing the action and tension of characters putting “John from Cincinnati” in a category of its own. I found each character, regardless of their significance to be colorfully entertaining and interesting. Each set puts you smack in the middle of the scene using realistic, accurate locations such as the seedy Snug Harbor Motel (Imperial Beach, CA). As the viewer, you do not know where everything is heading in terms of the purpose of John Monad; “John from Cincinnati”. You know nothing of his past and only that he posse certain spiritual powers. There is a reason he landed in the Yost’s backyard. As of episode IV, it has not been revealed. Additionally, the cast of supporting characters seem to be sent to “look out” for the Yost family. Again, the purpose is tactfully waiting to be revealed. The roles are beautifully executed by the entire cast. Every actor brings major skills to the screen. Well selected group of thespians. Mitch and Nunn have captivated me with this show. I thoroughly enjoy every episode and look forward to V this week (7/08/07). Hopefully, the feedback and ratings will keep “John from Cincinnati” going for many seasons to come. HBO is moving forward with their unique projects. This show has all of the winning components of shows like the Sopranos and Six Feet Under. A must view!

tom k. gave it a10:
As a surfer living in Imperial Beach, where series is filmed, it captures much of the culture here. Bunch of burned out folks that still respect the ocean and all it gives. No, I have not seen John yet, but I am watching for him our at the pier.

Karen R. gave it a10:
Odd but very entertaining show...will definitely continue to watch.

On C. gave it a10:
"John From Cincinnati" I think is the strangest, most funny show ever produced for American TV. I'm really not into surfing either. This show has some great characters from all walks of life.

A C. gave it an8:
For what this show lacks in exposition, it duly compensates with intrigue. Very well casted except the character "Shawnie" (the kid looks great but his acting is anemic). I give the show a strong 8 rating despite the fact that for all of the show's plucky dialogue and charming array of characters, each episode lacks enough payoff to the vague plot to capture the casual view. My guess is that if the writers don't start to reel components of this story in really soon and offer a couple of major twists to maintain a buzz, this show will be deader than Deadwood before the fall season. Still, I must admit I'm firmly captivated and I must know what eventually happens to Butchie, Mitch, Sissy, Kai, Bill, Link and John!

jim j. gave it an8:
Thanks again HBO for giving us another quality show! very few networks..with he exception of Showtime, HBO and FX give us television that makes you think. The show has lots of different angles and characters to be developed.. I love the show and how Milch and his team can tear apart and rebuild characters like few others...Keep up the Great work!

Tenley N. gave it a10:
It's about time for a "television" (it's not tv, it's HBO), to come up with something that makes us pay attention and use our noggins. Leave it to Milch to come up with a cast of indelible characters, poke fun at us and make us ponder something other than ourselves (which is just about all the character Mitch does!). Looking forward to more; every detail matters here, so pay attention.

Cheryl gave it a10:
I love this program. It's original and full of strange characters. I can't wait for Sundays so I can see a new episode.

Alex gave it a10:
This show is easily one of the most intelligent and forward thinking programs. Those who dont appreciate it fail to think outside the box. John From Cincinnati takes it to the next level!

Kathy W. gave it a9:
The ONLY change I would make is to make the dialog clearer - easier to understand. The mumbling may be realistic acting but it doesn't help to understand what is going on in the episode. But even with this flaw, the story is provocitave and the multilayered characters are such a treat. Thanks HBO.

Isaiah A. gave it a9:
Most of the people giving this show les han a seven re probably people who hate think when watch TV. They probably think TV is to make you mindless. Though JFC is a fresh of breath air to me! There is finally a show that dosn't show the veiwer everything and make the characters no nothing. We are just as clueless if not more clueless than chacters. You wonder who and what this person John is what he wants and what else can you do besides making things popout his pockets and make people see visions of things. And if your one of those who love to think you probably ike to predict too. My guess is John is an Angel and the Yosts have a connection to god some how. Though I have my complaints the actors that portray Saun and Kye pay the role out. Though Suan racemay have a shyness problem or something. Kye has no excuse for bad acting.

THeresa L. gave it an8:
It is a thought provoking and interesting piece of television.

Bob E. gave it a10:
My wife and I love it! I wonder if there is a connection between John - Jesus and Cincinnati - Christ? I can understand why some folks are so vehemently against the show. Thank you, HBO!

steve k. gave it a9:
I really think the critics missed the mark on this one! This is some of the most unique television I have ever seen! I cant wait to see what's next... extremely smart dialog! It seems to me its a natural progression from deadwood and that maybe Milch's work is evolving... WELL DONE!

Jason B gave it a9:
Thank God for this show. It's so necessary, and overdue. For those who don't get it, you're better off sticking to Myth Busters. But then, to each their own. . .

Jimbo From Jersey gave it a0:
Completely unwatchable.

Rachel C gave it a10:
This is my favorite new show of the season, perhaps of the year. It doesn't even occur to me that there is supposed bad acting or that some of the shows stars are surfers and not actors at all. Each person brings something special, and you begin to realize that this is a story about a rather large, extremely dysfunctional family. "John" brings comic relief to the show, but also offers the perfect amount of hope to the situations this family faces. Bottom line is, I'm captivated! That's all there is to say.

Zig Zigy gave it a10:
The most interesting show out there right now: it's got me totally roped inand hanging on to see what develops next. It is a wonderfully imaginative series with enagaging albeit flawed characters, visible to viewers warts and all, and you get a sense that things are going to get better for everyone involved.

John M. gave it a10:
"Somthings I know, somthings I don't" "The end is near" For those who have not spent the time, this show is not to be missed. JM

Curtis W. gave it a9:
Early in the game but I'm along for the ride.

Jim G gave it a9:
I LOVE this show. It's quirky, keeps me guessing as what'll happen next, has memorable lines, good editing to keep all the plots in line... overall a great show, if you just let it flow through your head. John is a fascinating character that doesn't dominate the story, yet keeps you entertained whenever he appears in the show. Really hope it's not canceled because some folks don't like the new flavor of this type of show. It is my new favorite show & can hardly wait for Sunday nights... even if it means Monday morning is next.

james s. gave it a10:
I find it interesting how negative so many respones have been to john from cincinnati.Often times such visceral reactions are just that....reactions.A chord is being struck that makes the viewer uncomfortable.Personally I feel the show is revelatory, brave and cutting edge story telling. I care about these people already. My feeling is that people are uncomfortable with the esoteric quasi spiritual themes that are suggeste but not elucidated. There is a powerful river of hope surging under the floorboards of the dsfunctional yost household. Milch seems to be intimating a larger more compasionate world that is avalable somewhere in the detritus of syringes on the beach and burned out misfits from forgotten eras. All this told through an hilarious lens of contemporary shakespearean characters. This show moves me,it feels brave and right and true so far.Milch has set the bar very high in my eyes, high enough to risk looking foolish or sentimental, that effort alone is worth a serious look at this story.

Rob L gave it a1:
This show has no charm or pizazz. There is no actor/actress on the show that I find interesting.

Jeff G. gave it a9:
This is a thinking man's show. Like any truly seminal work, it often takes time for the palette to adjust. Ignore the hyperbole of the under-educated; if you like to think, question your beliefs, and be challenged by your entertainment this is for you. If you like plot lines to be resolved every 30 minutes, or think the only good Sopranos episodes have killing in them, you may want to pass.

Pynchon T. gave it a10:
Milch, it seems to me, is presenting a series about revelation - and,for this reason, "professional" critics cannot figure it out. He places this tale of revelation in the most secular of venues - the surfers and beachbums of SoCal. John, "of Cincinnati," like John the Baptist, is not the prophet himself but the presage of the prophet. The prophet is the youngest Yost surfer. After all, EVERYONE else in the cast is increasingly dedicating their lives to protecting the boy. They don't talk about protecting him, they just do it. They don't know why, but they can't resist. Revelation. Moreover, ALL of the Yost males and even some of the protectors (including the once-drug-dealer) are experiencing "paranormal" phenomena, and the physician is already mystified.

C.M. gave it a2:
I can not remember a show where the characters were more unlikeable and annoying than they are in this confusing mess of a show called "John From Cincinnati." After a frustrating three episodes, I am severely tempted to abandon the strain sitting through what amounts to a lot of hard to swallow wierdness and yelling. As I believe the story line has potential; however, I shall give it one more opportunity to charm and entice rather than fill me with distaste and bafflement.

John F. gave it a10:
I love the series so far. Totally weird. Really dig the music too. Especially tha rare Muse track, the blues and Kava Kava 'Tic' when Shauni waits in the tent

Sonya gave it an8:
The dialogue is brilliant as usual. The show pulls you in - you want to see what happens next. I'll keep watching

franck J gave it a9:
This is a weird show but in a good way, there are a mix of drama, comedy, fiction.

Tom M gave it a10:
I can't quite explain why, but this damn show has captivated me somehow. I enjoyed The Sopranos, but if I missed an episode or two, it really didn't matter. But with JFC, I find myself waiting for the next show no sooner than the last one ended. It's got enough bizaare characters to fill an insane asylum, enough mystery to re-write Edgar Allan Poe, and an edge of mysticism to top it all off. After three episodes I'm getting vibes that John is some sort of new age profit, and that Saun Yost is probably something like the second coming of Christ. I'm expecting to see hordes of devotees following Saun all over the coast of California seeking miracles and Truth before it's all done, but we shall see. Is it Sunday yet?

Joannie S gave it a1:
Insult to a thinking person's intelligence. No redeeming qualities. Worst show I've watched in years.

Richard K gave it a3:
This show is just plain bad. After barely being able to finish watching the 3rd show, I've concluded that I don't care about any of these people, especially John. After Deadwood, I thought David Milch would have come up with something really great. What a major dissapointment.

Stephen R gave it a0:
No plot, characters that are imposible to sympathize with, let alone identify with or even relate to; self-important scenes with pretentious, awkward dialogue, total lack of believability and ultimatelys disconnected from mianstream America as the Bush administration. Someone's got too much money to take the time to shop at a supermarket.

kristin l gave it a10:
I love the mix of character personalities and that I feel like I know them to an extreme certain extent. I have no idea where where its going but I will definitely be along for the ride

dan h gave it a9:
Those that dont get it, probably dont get a whole lot! My girlfriend and I are completely hooked

Julia gave it a10:
This is the type of show that you have to watch more than once to appreciate. I can see how that might turn some people off. TV has traditionally been instant gratification, no thought needed fare. If you are looking for something a little more hearty to sink your teeth inyo this summer, give JFC a chance. At the very least, you won't regret watching Greyson Fletcher (Shaun) surf.

John B gave it a10:
Outstanding. Fine acting and fascinating plot - never dull with Milch.

John S gave it a9:
Great show! John reminds me of the lead actor in 'Eraserhead' - love it!

[Anonymous] gave it an8:
some things i know and some things i don't. one thing i know is that this show is waay compelling. one thing i don't know is what the hell is going on. and that's what makes it so good, i think.

kitty O gave it a9:
I loved this series (so far). Yes, it is challenging; and no, I don't understand everything (yet). But I am totally fascinated by the David Lynch (but more modern) style of film. I can't wait for the next episode. I would like to have both Deadwood and John playing...but I really like this new addition.

J W gave it a10:
Through two episodes "John from Cincinatti" has the intrigue of Heroes (though it does not have the desperate need for a great conclusion, something Heroes failed miserably in) combined with the sharp wit and dialogue of Deadwood. While I am not sure where Milch plans to go with the supernatural edge the story brings if he has something even remotely decent in mind the show will be brilliant. Ultimately, it is the interactions between the characters, in particular, the way that everyone reacts with the title character that makes this show so enjoyable. The wit is undeniable, and the two Deadwood actors that we have been exposed to thus far, have been nothing short of brilliant. I just hope that they get Timothy Olyphant involved at some point. How he was not cast as Linc (Luke Perry's character), I will never know.

Alex a gave it a1:
Possibly the worst project Milch has ever undertaken. This show makes no sense. However it is about as good as NyQuil for putting you to sleep.

frank c gave it a9:
unusual and thought provoking....not the average mindless dribble

Andre gave it a0:
The worst show on TV. I can't believe HBO got rid of Deadwood for this.... So Very Sad

Tony E gave it a2:
This show is, at least based on the premiere, one of the most ridiculous, unwatchably pretentious TV shows ever produced. I give it a 2 only because it's good to see Ed O'Neill, the one member of the cast I didn't want to choke through the screen.

Marie L gave it a10:
I loved the show and look forward to more of the same. I loved watching the surfers. It reminds me of the great Northern Exposure show and all the quirky characters that made that show so special. This has the potential to do the same. The "big mistake" HBO made was not only putting it on the same night as the Soprano's finale, but right after that show. Hence, all the detractors are trying to compare it to the Sopranos and are all huffy because they think it's supposed to be a replacement and the Soprano fans are pissed off and vetting their anger at the way Chase ended the show. They are taking it out on this potential great little show. This was a big HBO mistake. I only hope they give the show a chance to catch on. Remember, no one liked Six Feet Under either !!!!!

Adam G gave it a6:
I don't really know what to make of this, but there were funny bits that were worthwhile. It's quite off-putting in a lot of ways, but I really want to know more about John and so will be tuning in tonight for episode 2.

jonathan le gave it a9:
Some deadwood dialogue awesomness in a modern surfer town setting with an interesting character reminescent of David Lynch's typical players. Hard show to pin down but great sof ar.

Philo gave it an8:
So far so good. The show has considerable room to grow with a solid cast. To those who think it is confusing... relax and catch a ride. The show is a lot like surfing, it's never predictable, simple but takes some effort, and enjoyable just watching it.

[Anonymous] gave it a10:
Loved the soundtrack to this show

Val A gave it a10:
this series is going to continue to build like a game 7 of a world series, goodbye sopranos , Hello John. A home run.

t s gave it a2:
Dull. It might have lofty ambitions, but fails miserably in execution. Making it "weird" is no substitute for making it engaging. An frankly it wasn't that weird. I like weird. It was just tedious.

Kamakura Kid gave it a10:
Excellent show, give it a chance. I am tired of the types of shows where everything is spelled out in the first 20 minutes, this show is not an insult to those of us who enjoy quality TV.

Rina F gave it a9:
Quirky, bent, surreal. John From Cincinnati, it's definitely a ride and a rush. You don't know what to expect but you're hooked. I love it!! Totally different, a stand alone.

Louis S gave it an8:
Very interesting characters, but some actors are not yet fully grounded (pun intended). Similar to Milch's other work, a large cast character driven drama, but with a background that seems less interesting than the old west or the NYPD. Worth watching for a few weeks though, to see where it goes.

Gary M. gave it a9:
This is an unconventional TV show, which is most definitely a good thing. I'm bound to follow it till its end, whether it be the series finale in the far away future (hopefully) or the show's cancellation which happened much too soon. Let's hope people who will watch it will give it a chance.

Jim M gave it a2:
I somehow, against my better instincts, managed to watch the first episode. The entire time I kept trying to figure out how they could take Deadwood off the air for this 'Twin Peaks' wanna-be.

Patti G gave it a9:
There is something that is so precious about this show that makes one smile, but it draws the line at being too sappy. Long live the new HBO series!!

Cathy O gave it an8:
After the extremely disappointing ending to the Soprano's, I found this series intriguing, humerous, and fun to watch. I TVO'd it so I could watch it a second time (granted, it is a little offbeat) and I liked it even more. Of course, I loved Carnival, Deadwood, and Six Feet under. The actors consist of a fantastic cast and being a California girl, I adored the surfing shots. Lighten up critics!

languid g gave it an8:
Ok, Deadwood, 6 feet under, and Sopranos were amazing. Rome pretty good. Big Love horrific. If your with me here, than I can't imagine how this strange, vague, weirdness wrapped up in surfing wouldn't be stimulating. I think people should lay off being overly judgmental until more episodes are digested as well.

LINDA H gave it an8:
Thie show was differant from anything I had ever seen before. Just how many times did they use the F word.? After watching the show I want to visit/or move to Imperial Beach.

Steve D gave it a7:
Obviously a show like this can't be judged properly on one ep. But it had a pleasantly distant, distracted atmosphere and characters I want to learn more about. Maybe it'll turn out to meander pointlessly in an endlessly pretentious manner but Milch being a genius an' all, I'd bet he'll bring along the ideas to back up the vague mysticism this episode hinted at.

biff k gave it a2:
HBO's new "edgy" drama is a wipe out. Don't go near it without lots of pain medication nearby.

Quisp L gave it a10:
I f@*#'n loved it!

J M gave it a3:
Left DEADWOOD for this? Shameful.

Bill R gave it a6:
Pretty uneven plot. So far, the show doen't seem to know what it wants to be. However, it has potential.

Will H gave it an8:
I thought it was really funny. I wasn't expecting that.

glen s gave it a9:
A lot of my high review comes from the large amount of faith I have in David Milch from his work on Deadwood. The dialog is just as fantastic as Deadwood, and the characters are compelling. The faith only plays a role in that it allows me to believe the series is going to go somewhere, and have some kind of message. Of course, so far I've only seen episode one, but I found it highly entertaining (watched it twice in fact), if a bit hard to follow at times. But it seems hard to follow only because of a certain depth and complexity, not because it lacks a plot or cohesion.

Dee A gave it a10:
I'm hooked after seeing the first show. Quirky and funny with some great acting. The show is filmed in Imperial Beach which is close to where I live in San Diego. IB which us locals call it has always been a strange beach town sitting right on the border of Mexico. There is a run down end of the line feel to the place that has been that way for the 40 something years that I have lived in San Diego. It is the perfect backdrop to the messed up charaters in the show. Can't wait to see more!

hal b gave it a7:
An interesting premier. The show has definite potential. The character of John reminds me a bit of Peter Sellers' "Chancy" in the film "Being There". Or perhaps Woody Allen's "Zelig"...?

Bob P gave it an8:
wacky, offbeat, right up my alley so far!

Lacy R gave it a1:
Pretentious dribble. A far reach to try to encompass the intellectual crowd. The only people who could enjoy this series are those as mentally challenged as the characters featured on it. Bottom line, "it sucked Dude"

Michelle C gave it a2:
very confusing - boring - and tuned out after 10 inutes.

Craig T gave it a5:
i watched the first episode right after the sopranos, and i just came up with a big "meh." i think the fact that surfing's not nearly as cool as the mafia, grizzled fightin' cowboys in the old west, or a neurotic man running around LA getting into arguments with people will be the death knell of this show.

Rick J gave it a10:
Wonderful. Way to go Milch. Look forward to many more.

Travis gave it a1:
Not just bad (the kid who plays Sean must be one of the worst actors I've seen), but incredibly boring. I tried so hard to get through the entire premiere episode but had to give up halfway through.

jordon gave it an8:
Confounding but intriguing plotline. But most important, after one episode, I think I can grow to love these characters.

Jeff B gave it an8:
It is a very fun, interesting show. Nothing exactly happened in the first show, but it's already more original than half of what's out there.

John W gave it a2:
We got this instead of extending dead wood? Go f@#$ yourself.

Tyler S gave it a0:
I had the [dis]pleasure of vieing the first three episodes in advance. Trust me, 20 minutes in, this one will have you racing towards you telephone to cancel your post-Soprano HBO subscription. I am literally appalled that they dropped the masterpiece that was Deadwood for this steaming piece of poo!
