Out of the Final Fantasy games I've played, this is not my favorite. That honor goes the Final Fantasy VI. In fact, I think this game is a bit overrated. However, it is still an unforgettable classic that RPG fans should definitely play. (As if there's any RPG fan that hasn't played it.) I must say, after playing through it recently, I think the polygonal models have aged horribly, at least out of battle. I realize the game is 12 years old, so I wasn't expecting Killzone 2 calibur graphics, but they're still almost painful to look at. I'm sure they were truly mind-blowing when the game first was released, but it's 2009 now. In battle, they're actually still impressive, in a way.The summons in particular are still awesome to look at. The pre-rendered backgrounds still hold up, as well. The story is somewhat confusing, but I found it entertaining and even moving at times. At times Sephiroth's motives were unclear to me. (Even more confusing was that it wasn't even Sephiroth...O.o) I also had trouble figuring out who exactly Cloud is, but for the sake of spoiler-avoidance, I won't go into detail. (Though I'm sure most of you have probably heard the story, anyway.) The gameplay holds up well. Lots of classic ATB battles are to be had, and it's fun tweaking your characters and making them into machines of destruction. One of my favorite things about Final Fantasy VII is the music. Nobuo Uematsu created a masterpiece with the game's soundtrack. Just look up some orchestrated versions of some of the songs, and I'll guarantee you'll be in awe. While I still think that Final Fantasy VII is overrated and has too many fanboys, I can't deny it's a great game. I can't imagine that any serious RPG fans are left that haven't played it, but if there are, I'd recommend they check it out.

Dr. Bem gave it a7:
Final Fantasy VII is not a bad game, but it's certainly not a great one either. There are a good number of memorable moments and the story is decent, but the spotty pacing, strict adherence to linearity, terrible dialogue and boring battles that take up far too much of the game bring down what is otherwise a masterpiece. People tend to remember the good parts of the game and fail to understand that more or less everything has aged atrociously.

Logan Disney gave it a10:
The best game ever made, without a doubt. An incredible storyline and great characters add to the perfectly suited music of the game and pioneering (heheh) graphics of the game to make it one of few games I could play forever and never stop loving it.

[Anonymous] gave it a6:
This game isn't bad by any means, but the thing is, why does everyone say it's the best game ever? Play it over again and tell me you don't find plenty of flaws this time around. The music is great and the combat is fun for a good amount of time, but the frequent random encounters, unlikeable characters, and laughably bad dialogue keep this from being great. You can feel free to try it out, but it's definitely an acquired taste, and by that, it's for people who are highly nostalgic or have somewhat low standards. It's sixty bucks right now, money with which you could get Tales of Vesperia, which avoids all of these problems. Plus, you could even get another game on the side.

Anyone who rates this game lower then a 9 is one of those people who just likes to go a different direction then the crowd. They would do this for anything. If there was a movie everyone loved.... they would make up a reason to hate it. Best game of all time. Haters, hope you enjoy lying to yourself your whole life.

Mergal gave it a10:
I was surprised for how long this game was! 4 discs on a playstation! i really don't know how people finish that in 10 hours! i took about 40 hours, having fun in the mini games a bit on the way... replaying the wall market side quests section for how taboo it was, i suppose. i really don't know any other game with a crossdresser as the protagonist; adding in a brothel, and a gym for gay men. I really don't know any other game that would have those things. o.o so, i'll thank Final Fantasy VII for leading much of the gaming world into 3D and being so creative about it, though i'm only exaggerating the crossdresser comment of the wall market slums part here for kicks. (but, teehee, you could get sexy cologne!)

Jacob D. gave it a10:
One of my favorite games of all time, it has a intriguing story line with very in depth characters. the fighting system works amazingly well, and it can be hard at parts.here are so many secrets and things to find you will spend hours going over everything, i know i did!

Chris C gave it a10:
one of times great masterpieces. i wont even discuss how great a game it is because i know some will unconditionally support it and others will act the same against it, but ever since i played it when i was 5 years old back in 1997 to now when i am 17 and still playing this piece, i still get emotionally involved in the huge, deep storyline. if only someone were to create a novel from this game, the artistic story could be shared to everyone, even those that love to hate video games of the sort.

Faisal gave it a10:
I was with the detractors who are puzzled about the praise that is lavished on this game and believe it to be one of the most over rated of all time. I say was because I have had a BIG change of heart after completing the game for the second time ( after a gap of 10 years!) the other day. I finally can see what the fans have been saying all along - this is without doubt one of the greatest games of all time and probably my personal favourite game. The best 16 bit rpgs can't touch this - yes, including Chrono Trigger. I am suprised myself at how my second experience has so transformed my views and feelings about this game. I think the main reason why is that I had a grasp of the complex plot (with a bit of help from plot analysis articles by fans) much better this time around. The story and characters and music are what really lifts this game above most other story driven games. Having said that every aspect of the game is well designed including the battle system. If you have only tried this game once, not liked it much but suspect it might be worth a second try I recommend you do. You may be in for a big pleasant suprise.

I am a really huge fan of the final fantasy series, but my favorite of all times is final fantasy 7. I just wish that they still sold that game. I've been trying to find that game for a long time. Please start selling that game again. I really want to get that game. That is my number one adventure game and I love that game so much. It is awesome. Please e-mail me and let me know if you have a copy of the game. I'm starting my own game also.

Ryan G. gave it a10:
The best Rpg ever. To this day, and its all in the story.

Jesse R. gave it a4:
The most overrated game ever. Lots of ADD-afflicted kids worship this game and refuse to try anything 2-D. This is sad.

Robert Y. gave it a9:
Perhaps not the best game of all time, but among the best. To respond to what was stated by Mike M., there are numerous flaws in his criticism. First -- the graphics were absolutely spectacular for being the beginning of the Playstation Era. I remember, after playing Final Fantasy VIII and IX, thinking back at how much "worse" the VII graphics were. However, upon playing VII again I realized my error. The fact is, they did absolutely amazing things with the resources they had. Second, regarding the characters. Mike's comments lead me to wonder if he played through the entire game, specifically to Disk 3. They do indeed start by presenting the characters as the usual stereotypes. However, through the game you find out more about each character, including some major things that make them anything but your ordinary "wooden, teen-programmed protagonists." Third, you call Sephiroth an "angst-ridden villain who we must accept as evil simply because he acts like it, with little discernible motivation." There are places you would get lynched for saying this. First, Sephiroth is perhaps one of the most complex villains of all time, because he is truly likable. In addition, his actions are clearly being influenced by an outside source (Jenova), which has an unknown degree of control over him. In addition, his relationship and history with the main character leave room for major psychological examination. I have written college papers on the subject of Sephiroth, and so I think we can drop the mistaken notion you seem to have that he is stereotypical. In addition, the primary struggle in the story is not "ultimate good versus ultimate evil." When truly examined (assuming you've played through the entire game), you can see that the primary conflict is the psychological conflict that the main character has with himself. Even the final battle can be viewed entirely as an allegory for a struggle inside his mind. "Good and evil" are not the sides presented. The "good" characters are clearly flawed, even somewhat villainous in their own ways. The "evil" characters are clearly gifted and most are very likable, despite being on the opposite side of the conflict. There were indeed more groundbreaking projects, similar deep stories, and these games should have a better reputation. This does not, however, diminish the amazing gameplay, graphics (yes, graphics), story, characters, and structure of this game. It's more than a "good JRPG." It's a great, universal RPG that is one of the most timeless classics we have seen in the genre.

Jason D gave it a10:
This game is a work of art... I played this game for 70 hours and I had a hard time fighting the final battle not because it was hard(if you can beat the ultimate weapons, Sephiroth is nothing) it was hard becasue I did not want the game to end, this is the only game i have ever played that made me mourn at the thought of it coming to an end. The graphics were outstanding... the best of its time period. if you dont agree prove it.... tell me a title to look at. But as I remeber it, games went from SNES/SAGA graphics to FF7. the story is the greatest but in my opinion the freedom of this game is what made it the most revolutionary game I have ever played. of the 70 hours of game play 10 hours were story the other 60 were free reign of an entire world with vehicals to navagate every inch of the planet sized map, with side quest and character development that you are FREE to explore or not THIS GAME IS THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED.

Brian gave it a10:
I have to agree with tyler. i got this game when it came out first and was absolutely blown away... 1997 i think. i cant see how it could be described as sub par - sub par to what ? what else was really comparible to ff7 at the time? out of every game ive ever played i still rate it no1- best game ive ever played and im sure alot of people would agree.

Mike S gave it a5:
How is anyone supposed to care about these characters? For being so storyline-driven, it's a very un-intriguing story.

Zechs M. gave it a10:
My favorite game of all time! totally deserves a 10!

Ombar K. gave it a10:
Many people say this game is one of the most overrated game of all time because it is the first game that a lot of people played, including me. The thing is, many of those people have their own little game from which they all rate others game from and very often this game is FFVI. Personnally, I don't see what these people see in it as I didn't like it but they don't see what we love about FFVII either. Sure, our expectations for future games reflected FFVII's style as but the thing is that it was a great game, it set the bar too high for us to even think about something better, even today. The musical score is simply the best in any game I've layed up to today (and musical scores are pretty bad nowadays if you ask me), the graphics aside from the world map are great, especially battles, AMVs are simply phenomenal for the time, the story is complex and holds many twists, finally, I loved the materia system and the mini-games but that's more personnal. There's a lot of good stuff of which FFVII was the pioneer at the time, mainly storeline and AMVs and will remain for that reason a ground breaking game.

Tyler B. gave it a10:
I don't know why someone was complaining about grahpics of this game it came out at the birth of PS1 (it didn't even have analog controls)...he must be a 5 year old who doesn't appreciate where games come from. This IS Final Fantasy. Compelling story, revolutionary combat systems (when it was made), and an excellent game to be the first 3D final fantasy. It is an unforgettable experience from the first time you go into the land of Midgar.

Mike M. gave it a6:
Heralded by a generation of people to which this was their first "deep" game, Final Fantasy VII is merely a marvel of marketing, timing, and demographics. There were, by far, more engrossing games before and since - and though it succeeds on many fronts as a good JRPG, it is by no means one of the best games ever made. The graphics were especially sub-par for the time (especially if you consider the fact that I first saw it on the PC), the story follows the typical JRPG notion of 'ultimate good versus ultimate evil, with confusing allegorical twists', and employs wooden, teen-programmd protagonists... And not to mention an androgynous, randomly angst-ridden villain who we must accept as evil simply because he acts like it, with little discernible motivation. A good JRPG, but in the end, that's not saying much.

Rafiqy T. gave it a10:
best game ever all you nay sayers are crazy. it came out in 1997 our only other option was an over head look on a 2mm figure. the story is deep, the game play is great and the music is awesome! so all of you people who were not part of the target audience just shut up and accept it as the BEST GAME EVER!!!

Phil M. gave it a10:
This game, along with FFVIII are both the best games I've ever played in my life. The inconsistent art style is probably the only thing holding this game back. Everything else is just so perfect, such an immersive game.

sconway 321 gave it a9:
This game is fantastic. The story is MINDBLOWING, the characters are brilliant and gameplay is great fun. The only reason I don't give this game 10 is because it felt dated and had bad graphics. But you learn to put these faults aside and enjoy the game. One of my most favourite games.

Martin B. gave it a10:
Easily my favorite RPG ever. Its scope and epic-ness is only matched or surpassed by a handful of other games. Those who criticize the graphics need only realize this game was released more than a decade ago(1997).

Cloud S. gave it a10:
The very definition of gaming as an art.

Joey N. gave it a10:
Amazing game Ive got 2 copies of this the original I bought when first released the second Brand New Still Sealed just in case anything happens to my first one. I LOVE this game so emotional, so engrossing and anyone who does not agree otherwise Is not a gamer roll on the PS3 version (fingers crossed).

Albin B. gave it a10:
Best game ever... PERIOD.

Fred L. gave it a10:
Simply the best game EVER. I just love the tactical possibilities of the material system and the fantastic story. I <3 FF7

Wasif H. gave it a10:
So awesome... the ultimate game beautiful dramatic and filled with action.

Mareus K. gave it a10:
I have played games since i was 4 years old and i am proud to be able to say that I played almost every game worth mentioning in the game history atleast once. There are still a few titles i am trying to aquire, but its really just a few titles. That being said i have to admit that in my 20 years of playing games there were very few titles which managed to reach the heights of Final Fantasy 7. For those who judge this game purely by graphics i can only say i feel sorry for them because they are blind to the true art game, just as they are probably blind to to any form of art. They probably judge a book by its covers too. Its really sad they dont make more games like this. All of my best games come from 10 years ago. Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment... Final Fantasy 7. I don't know which is better. Fallout series... God... I wish they would just dump the graphics and start making good old games with good story...

David H. gave it a10:
Why in the name of God did I never play this game ten years ago? I'll say it... it puts ever other game I've played to shame. Okay, the characters and story aren't exactly the stuff of high art (Barret is about as cardboard as they come), but you care about them and they make you laugh. Still today, the level of depth this game offers is astonishing. When I eventually complete it (and I don'tm want to do that until I've beaten Weapon), onto IX and Tactics for something more challenging.

Jon gave it a10:
Best RPG I have ever played.

Christian S. gave it a10:
For me this is the better game of my life. I love the storyline and im waiting if there is a release for the PS3, try to serach in youtube "final Fantasy VII PS3". The graphics doesnt means if this a good game, this game has relesed in 1997, and for these times the graphics was cool. If you are a RPG fan, you must try this game, the Materia system is addicting as hell and im still playing since 2005 =D.

Conca C. gave it a7:
This title has inexcusable graphics, I can't stand the characters (e.g. Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, Barret) at all except for Yuffie since she is the most mischievous ally in Final Fantasy game ever and Cait Sith because he's actually a traitor of some sorts, something unseen before. The story and its turns do carry the game, as well as the challenging bosses and mini-games which I enjoyed a lot, for example the defending of the Fort Condor. It's a decent game but I enjoyed other games by far more.

Andy O. gave it a10:
FInaly Fantasy VII is the greatest game ever. Amazing graphics for it's time, memorable characters (love them or hate them you know who Cloud and Sephiroth are), great story, and amazingly successful. This game is the reason I play RPG's still, I long for something close to FFVII.

Neen gave it a10:
I have played every FF game and this one still holds top spot. But don't take my word for it, play it all the way through with an open mind, and remember that this was the first 3D final fantasy title and that the achievements made at that time were phenomenal. If you look into the underlying templates of history and religion expressed in this game you will understand why it is so popular.

Johhny D. gave it a0:
Waste of time, poor graphics poor gameplay.

Isaac M. gave it a10:
My favourite game of all time. The best story, the best baddie, the most shocking twist at the end of disc 1 (yes all you who have played it know what I mean and shed a tear or 2). The 1st time I played this game was in 1998 and I was in awe!! The most inspired story telling I have yet to see in a game. There is no better RPG period!! That includes all the RPG's to come!!!

Luke G. gave it a10:
My favorite game of all time. The storyline was amazing and flawless. I have prbly played this game through many times on the pc and playstation the 6 years ive owned it and still want more. It was my first RPG i had ever played and i thought i would find better later on, but i didnt! Wow what a great game!

Alasdair D. gave it a10:
This is, quite simply, the single greatest game ever made. It is perfection. It's also really cheap now, so even if you have to forgo buying food for a few days, do so.

Titanium Dragon gave it a10:
This is simply one of the best RPGs ever made, and possibly the single best RPG ever made. The materia system allows for a great deal of flexibility in what your characters can do, which makes for good gameplay, and while there are some "cheap tricks" generally they aren't obvious until the second time through (which obviously means it was good enough for a replay). The story is quite good and engaging and the characters are well developed and it is very possible to empathize with them. The reality of the past is quite entertaining, and it is great to see both the future and the past revealed throughout the game. The storyline is good enough that the game has replay value, and it has a lot of minigames which are entertaining. The pacing of the story is excellent and it feels like you're making constant progress throughout the game towards the ending, with story scattered throughout. All in all, an excellent RPG, and one I'd highly reccommend to anyone, even someone who doesn't play RPGs.

Tin Man gave it a6:
This is a great game, and a very succesful game, but the storyline is medicore, and the character development could have been better. The materia system does not provide any unique battle expierience eithier. This game is really succesful without a doubt, but it is also a little overrated. Graphics don't matter to me but I just felt that the storyline wasn't that great and the character development was only there for Cloud, Vincent, Barret, and Tifa. Caith Sith, RedXIII, Cid, Yuffie had crappy development and I mean CRAPPY development. Overall, not bad just overrated.

Jerk Guy gave it a10:
I have little if not any respect or regard for anyone’s general game knowledge or opinion that doesn’t recognize the quality of FFVII, especially those of you who play RPG’s. If you condemn this game because of its mid 90’s PS1 style of graphics then you’re being ignorant, that’s like saying a New Hope is crap because the digital animation of the light sabres doesn’t stand up to the modern styles of digital animation of the 21st century, or that The Empire Strikes Back should be disregarded because Yoda is a puppet and not perfectly digitally animated. People who are swayed by graphics alone obviously do not have the intellectual capacity to appreciate the body and content of a game, movie or anything telling a story. FFVII did the best they could with what they had to tell a story. Good graphics do not necessarily make a good game. It simply boggles the mind how anyone who loves FF could rate this game a 0. Mark B, you said “there is no character development and the story line is just retarded”, you must have bought a shotty copy of the game, because the FFVII that I have played is quite the opposite from what you have described, in fact if you keep in mind the definitions of the words ‘character’ and ‘development’, there is no way you can logically justify that this game has “no character development” or even “not much character development” because it is obviously jam packed with it. I have been a gamer for over 20 years now and I have played games on almost all consoles as well as PC, I have played every FF game ever released along with dozens of other RPG and adventure titles and I can honestly say that FFVII is one of if not the best RPG’s I have ever played. I have played and mastered this game numerous times over and even now, ten years after its release I can still play it and get hooked into it. Its graphics are not what make FFVII immaculate, it is it’s unforgettable unique characters, fantastic story, awesome villains, spectacular world filled with a mixture of dirt and rust stained industrial technology mixed with awe inspiring natural and fantasy scenery and it’s epic scores that match the characters and their world to the level of perfection are just some of the few points that make FFVII an all time classic.

Joe M. gave it a10:
Totally agree with Chris C, this is the best game I have ever played. I hold it in such high regard that I compare no other game to it, because its just pointless. What really sickens me is people giving this game a big fat 0. Obviously, the only reason they do this is because they want to bring the overall average down because, in their opinion, its too high. There is no other reason for giving this a zero because you simply cant justify it. If you ask me, I will only ever give a game a zero if I open the box and suddenly see that the disk isnt there.

Sophie B. gave it a10:
After about 9 years of playing video games constantly (since about the age of 6, and I'm still only 15 and probably have a lot more games to play ^-^) I can safely say this is my favourite game ever. Even if the graphics are dated, you need to remember how long ago this was made - and a game which is as complex and well-plotted as fun and addictive is rare.

Zem Z. gave it a5:
This game is not in fact all that, it's mediocer at best & dated but you can see that it still wasn't that great in it's day, but don't get me wrong it's still a good game but there are beter games for your buck.

Mark C. gave it a10:
I would say this is the greatest game ever made, everything about it is amazing. The story is what all rpg's should aspire to, because it brings you in so easily, and gets you so involved. I have never felt heartbroken for a caracter in a game, but at one point in the game you'll see what I mean. It is a very long game, I think when I finally beat it I had played 58 hours, that right there speaks volumes about the games quality and story. Anyone who hasn't played this game really needs to go out and get it.

Dave W. gave it a10:
I can see nothing to complain about with FFVII. The story is excellent, the world is well thought, and the gameplay is solid. I believe that it has yet to be surpassed in the RPG genre since everything went 3D. There are those games where everything comes together to form an experience, this is one of those rare wonders.

Chris C. gave it a10:
Easily the best game ever created. A must buy and all of that jazz. Look at how many people gave it a 10, and then look at how many people gave it a 0. Not to mention that the people who didn't like the game (how, I will never know) never explain why. "Oh, well....the music is bad." Yes, the music is so bad that there are orchestras that tour the U.S. playing the entire FFVII score and it sells out instantly. I still get songs from the game stuck in my head probably about twice a week. "CLOUD LOOKS LIKE HE HAS HORSE HOOVES FOR HANDS" Yeah, well, how about you try and go back to 1997 (yes kids, thats a bit over TEN (10) years) with a developer's kit for PS1 and try to do a better job. I am sorry that FFVII does not satisfy every orgasmic graphical, extreme realism, and high definition desire that you've ever wanted. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if every person who gave a low rating due to graphics is an Xbox360 fanboi. In any event, if you have not played FFVII, I would suggest stopping what you are doing, and running to the nearest EB/Gamestop/Rhino to pick up a copy. The story is phenomenal, the music is widely acclaimed, and the gameplay is intricate and detailed enough that you can customize your playing style, but not so complicated that you get left behind before you can even learn the system. Yes, the game is long. It is very long. It's even longer if you do all the side quests and other fun stuff that they threw in there. The length of the game is something that I love. I have played the game start to finish probably at least 6 or 7 times. Stop reading this and go play it. (and Final Fantasy Tactics, too)

Gerry D. gave it a10:
FF 7 was the first FF I ever played, around five years ago, since then I have not found one game anywhere neart as good as this. This is the only game I would ever consider giving a ten. The plot here is much better than any other games which are considered to have amazing plots like deus ex or half life. Even the latest FF's dont give me the same satifaction as this.

Mark B. gave it a0:
Final Fantasy 7 is probably the worst Final Fantasy in the entire series. I don't understand the cult following that It has. The music is bad, the gameplay is just abismal, the graphics look like crap, there is no character development and the story line is just retarded. Every time I play it I have to force myself just to finish the first disc, after that i fell like I want to drill a hole in my head. If I could, I would go back in time and stop this game from ever being made.

Thomas H. gave it a10:

Becouse of graphics and the no voice i can under stand some one given a score of 9 but any lower is an insult. If you have never played this game before i recomed you go and buy it even if you have to buy a ps or ps2 it is more than worth it.

This game is the MOST INCREDIBLE GAME EVER! Along with its incredible secret and graphics, its also support by an equally amazing storyline which makes it one of the best games ever to be made.

Justin J. gave it a10:
Okay, after reading this... I am just embarrassed to see the amount of people giving this game any less than an 8. I love it, I was of the first 25 people in North America to own the game (Thank god for my mother working for playstation), and this game will forever be held in my heart as my favorite game ever released. Sub-par graphics? Fck off and buy a 360 you mindless shit; no voice acting? Who gives a damn? neither did 90% of the other games before the current gen release (ps2, xbox, gc). Even if you don't like rpgs, just watching someone play this game makes me happy. It's the beautiful story, the detail in every screen, and the realistic feel that make this the game of my collection. P.s. Aeris was never meant to come alive again. Ever. Not in ANY version of ANY game. If she had, that would have ruined the entire rest of the games story, as well as AC. The only deadline was for the translation, which is why you frequently see "off" instead of "of", the game was completed already, and if it hadn't been a HUGE detail like that would not have been a "let's scrap this" thing to leave out. P.p.s. The producer (I think) lost his grandmother during the production of FFIII, and he says that Aeris is very much like a reflection of her to him, her attitude and being. He never meant for Aeris to be revived, because you can't bring back someone from the dead, only cherish the memories you have of them (Cloud made her his inspiration to live, she also saves the entire planet with her memory in a sense). His grandmother gave him the will to push on, as Aeris gave Cloud the same feeling.

This game is the very reason of why i bought a ps one, it's the best game i've ever played over and over again.

Juliette T. gave it a10:
This is the game that got me interested in video games. I had never played an RPG before and this got me hooked! BEST GAME EVER! The story line is original, amazing and practically flawless. Each character is perfectly done, and there never has been a better protagonist trio! PLEASE remake this Square! DS!

Joe K. gave it a10:
This game is the best game i have ever played and i always loved FINAL FANTASY. Best game for the ps1 no doubt.

Loel gave it a10:
This RPG game is one of the best games I have ever played. The story line really pulls you in and makes you want to absorb every ounce of detail. The game is so good, you'll find yourself shouting at the bad guys on the screen when your party gets killed. Each character has their own deep story line, not just the generic, "the guy chosen out of random" hero. You'll fall in love with every one of them, maybe with the exception of Sephiroth. The music score is amazing, matching up to the one in Chrono Trigger, both of which were composed by Nobuo Uematsu. All gamers and non gamers should play this game. Square-Enix did an amazing job of creating the greatest video game of all time.

Alex The Sexy gave it a10:
There has never been a game this monumental. From the opening sights of Midgar to the final Slaying of Sephiroth, scale, character, and beauty are constant and even playing it today, it is a rare moment when you are anything but impressed. The best game ever. PORT THIS FOR THE DS!

What is there to say? When people say ceratain RPG's are cliche and been done before its because this game did it. Best storyline yet.

Dan A. gave it a9:
So overrated today. But FF7 still holds up fairly well.

AWESOME GAME! changed how i look at role playing games!

Bryan S. gave it a10:
Simply the best story of any video game. The materia system was perfect and the graphics were great for the time. The only problem was the tedious random battles.

James T. gave it a9:
Awesome game. Most people dont realize the sacrifice of graphics for more room for the game, but thats not something everyone takes into account. This game has a great storyline, awesome battles, and the giant sword we all know and love. (which he swings one handed after a victory! >.< ) This is a great game, and the only thing i dont like is that you cannot get Aeris back in the american version because of deadlines.

Bryan M. gave it a10:
Best game on the ps1. The only little problem is the graphics but who really cares about the graphics its the gameplay that matters and it has great gameplay, also the storyline is one of the best it got me hooked right away. I hope they make a remake of the game.

Johnny D. gave it a10:
A game so brilliant it enlightens your soul.

Podge R. gave it a10:
I've played and beaten all the Final Fantasy games, even now this is still my fave.

Jhon T. gave it a10:
Final Fantasy 7 is the best game ever. I only wish they made it for PlayStation 3.

DeWayne H. gave it a10:
The best game ever made. I know it is a little bit outdated and the graphics aren't exactly superb, but this is the number one game of all time. And everybody knows that graphics don't make a game, right? It has the greatest storyline of any game, period. The only storyline that comes close would be God of War. The gameplay is awesome. It is so fun that anybody can enjoy it. The materia system is awesome, any idiot can pick up the controller and have fun. The level uip system is awesome. And it is one of the few Final Fantasies that doesn't have set abilities for certain people. Anybody can be a straight up physical attacker or a healer or a black mage. It doesn't matter. I would give this game a 14 /10, but they won't let me.

Mark D. gave it an8:
I can appreciate this games ground breaking plot, graphics, characters, the fact that it brought games and movies that bit closer and made RPGs cool yet i still gave up half way through. You see, despite all that it's still a hardcore RPG and only RPG fans will be engrossed till the end. So it "only" gets an 8.

Mre xxx gave it a10:
I just started this game in early 06 and even though the graphics are outdated, it's story makes up for it. Its easily the best game I have played graphics or not.

Kza gave it a9:
I bunked school for a month in '96 to play this game. First Oscar deserving entrance into cinematic gaming. People still talk about the soundtrack at parties. A game that defines gamers.

Tyler C. gave it a10:
Might not be the absolute best game I've ever played, but easily the most memorable. I can't remember a better time playing a game than playing FF7 for the first time.

A BStreetz gave it a10:
No, this is not my first RPG (and not my last nor latest) but I will say that it deserved a 10 because of the story line. If anyone ever really took time and played with no hints, cheats, nor walkthroughs; they'd find that it takes more out of you while putting double back into you. For instance when it starts off, and only if you played to understand it, you'd nearly instantly feel like your in Cloud's shoes. I mean this game took me weeks 2 play and yet I still haven't beatin it today (game got scratched and I have no PS nomore) but anywho, the game is one of those that'll make you cry, laugh, and feel like smacking someone. FF7 put me in a state of mind that made me feel like I was the one, that one that couldnt be beat. Hahaa! Kinda funny though considering my age in all but hell its one of those games that can't be touched. The minus to it all is the graphics they are upright just nasty horrible, but to me when it comes to a game with hell of a punch to the series it more than is given a score its given an award. I just hope the makers update the graphics for play on something like the Gamecube or PS2, hell maybe even the Xbox. No, they dont need to change anything, just graphics.

Jason T. gave it a9:
I give this game an 8.5. The above score says 8, but I really give it an 8.5. Why not a 10? Because even though this game is fun to play, it is not pefect, and by all means is not the greatest game ever made. The reason everyone says it is perfect is probably because it is the first FF game, or even the very first game they have ever played, so in their mind, it is the most revolutionary game ever. This is why FFVII is the most over-rated game of all time. I liked the game (yes, die-hard fans, I've played through the game for MORE than 60 minutes...It took me 66 hours to complete),and the story for the first half or so of the game was fantastic with the Shinra trying to take over the world's supply of Mako, but the story dragged down a little bit with the intro of Meteor and that massive monster that almost destroyed Midgar (I'm sorry, but I forgot the name. Was it Ultimate...something?). It wasn't bad, just not as awesome as how the game first started out. The characters were good, and the death of Aeria was drmatic, and Sehiroth as a villain is good...just not amazing. the storyline of Jenova was really interesting, and the flashbacks into Cloud's past were very compelling...Just too damn long. I don't care what you fanatics say. Cut scenes are great, but I want a game, not an interactive movie. Overall, I'd give it an 8.5, maybe even a 9, since the game is a fun, classical experience. It is NOT the greatest game ever made, but it's probably one of the best RPGs out there.

Jack M. gave it a10:
Truely Emotional if only ff7-2 was a game.

Brian B. gave it a10:
My favorite game. Great-story, music, characters, everything. I recommend this game to anyone who is an rpg fan or is looking to play a great classic game.

WIll gave it a10:
For those of you that say this game sux well... have you actually sat and played it for over 20mins? If so try playing it for a couple of hours and you will very quickly see a story developing. Give it a try guys you will love it. This is the BEST game of all time. One of the first relases for PS1 and so u can accept the graphics which were excellent for the time it was released. And i dont mind reading what people are saying. You couldn't expect that much talking to be put into such an early game for the PS console so jus get used to it. The story line is very touching and really keeps you playing on and on. It is the best story line ever to exist in a game period. The charactors are good as they all differ greatly to each other. They have there own personalities and own limit break abilities. The game has so many extra (yet not essential) parts to it which you can complete which really makes the game loads more fun. Secret places to explore new weapons and magics to find and ultimate limit breaks are hiding for to find.

Sean S gave it an8:
Just to clear things up, FFVII is a great game. Is it the best RPG ever? Is it the best Final Fantasy ever? No. Why? Well, first off, the story is only mediocre, which is a huge downer because story is the key element of any RPG. The characters are ok, but they don't seem to have much life. Aside from Yuffie and Red, all the pther characters seem like clones of another one, like Barret and Cid, or just don't have a very likable personality, like Cloud (Which was fixed by the release of FFVII:AC, which helps make FFVII much more enjoyable). Hate me if you wish, but Cloud and Sephiroth are not the greatest ever. Cloud is rather lifeless and Sephiroth not only helps to overcomplicate the story (and not in the Chrono Cross good way), but he seems rather randon and tries too hard to be "badass". But, like I said, FFVII is a great game due mainly to it's sheer size. There are a ton of extra things to do, such as level 4 limits, chocobo breeding, and the WEAPONS. All these combined with the awesome materia skill system make up for most of the game's downpoints. Sure, it doesn't reach the "Chrono" level of RPGs set by Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, but neither does any other RPG, but FFVII is one of the best, though highly overrated, RPGs out there, and every RPG fan must play it.

Piltz M. gave it a10:
First game to ever touch a human soul and heart.Gifted story teliing and exelent musical score makes this game last forever in the gaming history.

Jon C. gave it a10:
all you haters are complete duds. FFVII was one of the FIRST games for the PS1. and therefore, AMAZING grpahics for the time. The plot is amazingly deep, and complex. it may not be the best of all time, but its up there, and if u disagree, you obviously like those games like Catwoman. If you pay attention, you will enjoy it, its a RPG, so if u want like full on action, wrong game for you, this game is surrounded by plot, and asuming people could read. (and FYI cloud acts like that because of the plot).

Marc L. gave it a10:
This game is truly incredible.the story kepps you into it all the way to the end and the replay value is awsome, music is excellent overall one of the best rpgs ever.

Virginia G. gave it a10:
This game just totally kicked ass. Best ff game in my opinion. You can spend a lot of time actually trying to achieve all the different materias and events that will happen. It brought interest for me to play more RPG games. People out there that say this is a bad game and is overrated think again. You just can't compare the graphics to the games today. I played it when it first came out, it had the best graphics at that time. The storyline may be a bit confusing, but if you are truly a FF fan, you would play the game over a couple of times through, and truly understand what the game was about.

Justin G. gave it a10:
The storyline of FF7 imerses you in a complete universe of vivid characters who make the game feel like you are reading a book. Through the 3 discs of the game, you will get hooked on knowing the outcome of the characters. Despite now dated graphics and technology, the nostalgia for fans of the FF series is great.

Sephiroth gave it a10:
This was the best Final Fantasy game Ever! It had the best FF storyline, great Playstation graphics at the time and the audio was phenominal!

Kain C. gave it a10:
Just a damn good game. Solid storyline, 70+ hours of gameplay which will keep you wanting more and more till' the end, then you'll want to do it over again, to find the things you missed. Its IMPOSSIBLE to do everything once. Best game i've ever played.

Martin K. gave it a10:
One of the greatest games ever made. The storyline is on par with any great literary work. Right now, FFVII and the Metal Gear games are the only ones I can think of that truly deserve 10 points.

Lorenzo L. gave it a6:
Frankly, this game is seriously overrated. Even for its time, the in-game graphics were not that surprising, and FMV were very inconsistent in their quality. While the audio quality was very good, some of the sounds got very repetitive. The characters are the high-point, most noticeably, Cid, Vincent, Cait-Sith, Yuffie...even as these characters are supposed to play second fiddle to Aeris, Tifa and Cloud, they undeniably stand out for their charm, mystery and involvment in the storyline, as well as their own personal one. As for the story, it was very good, but the twists and turns were not carefully implemented or intelligent, i.e. for some time you were believing something that was simply not true...for no reason!!! As for character implementation in the stoy, kudos to Squaresoft...

Mike C. gave it a10:
Not much has to be said about FF7 in the year 2006. Most everyone who knows shit about games has payed it and come to their own conclusion, bu thtis game decimates almost any game ever made. The graphics were amazing for the times and the gameplay was very addictive, in depth and EXTREMELY fun.

Marcus M. gave it a10:
lol the majority of ppl are saying this game rocks and there are just some ppl who dont like it (those who dont like RPG of course) so why dont you just get outta here! "They could've done better" oh yeah? they did their best with the technologies they had, 4 CDs man...there are tons of factors that have to be taken into account cuz this game is not made by ONE person you idiot. Learn progamming, design, and graphics before you put any negative feedback!

Jake C. gave it a10:
Quite possibly the best game ever.

George D. gave it a10:
I don't really understand how someone could think the story to this game was anything but breakthrough. Well, that's not true; I do understand. Being an English major, I often bear witness to the awful comprehensive power of the young mind. At several points in this list, people have stated that the Cloud character had no personality. While the character was intentionally written to be introverted, a great deal of expression and throught process came through the subtleties of the character. The character remains one of the most profound and intriguing characters to ever grace a videogame. The fact of the matter is, the story for Final Fantasy VII is so powerful, profound, intelligent and, often times, psychologically subtle that I am surprised any ordinary videogame fan was able to enjoy it. With games like Halo or Splinter Cell -- games wherein you simply run around and kill things without really having to fire a neuron or comprehend much of anything, other than your location on a screen -- it isn't a stretch to assume the average videogame fan is probably slow on the draw when it comes to things like reading comprehension, character analysis, or intuitive psychology. This hypothesis can also be reached by reading how many people complained of a "boring" story -- one person actually said that the psychology "ruined it" -- in the same breath as they complained about "horrible graphics." The graphics in the game were probably 8 on a list of the 10 most important aspects of the game. I won't go into every reason the game was breakthrough and will never be bested -- I actually stopped playing videogames after I completed it in 1997. I realized the year I played it that there was never, ever going to be anything like it again. It is just too smart for the average videogame fan. They don't want to process all the information, the characters, the messages, and the subtleties. They definitely don't want to process all the detective work that must be done and all the side games that are to be completed. They just want to click on a few characters and tell them to kill some other characters, or they want to point a rocket launcher in a vague direction and see things explode in great detail. Final Fantasy VII sacrificed a lot of its graphics for gameplay. There was so much too the game that A) the graphics hardly mattered at all, and B) for the time, it was too large to make the game with such profound quality and maintain superficial quality. Final fantasy VII was and is simply too good for pretty pictures -- though, all of the locations were beautiful and the vehicles were well conceived. There will never be another game this good. Videogamers just don't want to have to have the brainpower to play this.

Leanne T. gave it a10:
I love this game, it's the best I have in my whole range of FF games, for the year it was out in the graphics were ace and they storyloine was so intricate I had to play it over and over, which made me enjoy it evenmore.

Ben L. gave it a2:
Indeed, I can't agree with Chris P. any more. People call this "the best game ever", and I honestly cannot see why. Alright, I'll hand it to you, it has good music, okay graphics (the regular animation was pretty icky, but the fmv's were pretty nice for the time), and a mediocre badguy. But, the plot was weak in many place, and the character development was terrible. Cloud has the personality of a rock, and when it comes to RPG's a game may be better looking then the rest, but if its story clunks, then it will never pass for me.

Nick B. gave it a10:
This was a great game, storyline was excellent (who can forget the scene at the end of disc 1?), music was great as to be expected, but the overworld graphics could have been a little better.

eX-Soldier Strife gave it a10:
The best game ever created, when I saw Final Fantasy 7 : Last Order and Advent Children I played the game over again. Even if the game is old it remains a classic and my favourite game. From the mythology and themes to the music and storyline, Final Fantasy 7 is flawless.

Hannah L. gave it a0:
This game is boring. Graphics are horrible, and they could've done better. I wouldn't be so angry if that was the best they can do, but I saw other ps1 games that have WAY better graphics than this. Cloud has like horse hands. And it's always so dark. And, it's SUPER boring. It's impossible to finish this game.

Mike S. gave it a10:
Best game i have ever played the story line is so awsome. sephiroth is the best villian in final fantasy. graphics were ok but there hands were blocks but i dont care bout the graphics it just feels like your there best game i ever played and it cant get any better.

Seth C. gave it a10:
Best RPG (and FF) ever, which makes it all the more tragic that the series has been on a downward spiral (with the exception of FFIX) ever since.

Chris P. gave it a4:
From what many people say, "The Best Game Ever". Unfortunately, I can't disagree more. What we are presented with here, is a game with a mediocre at best storyline. They tried to infuse it with so much psychological meaning, that they ruined it. The music is good, for the most part. Unfortunately, most people only remember the song, "One Winged Angel". There are many other songs in this game, most of which being subpar when compared to previous Final Fantasy soundtracks. All in all, it is a shame that this is how the Final Fantasy series was immortalized when much of the groundwork of this game was started in Final Fantasy VI. But hey, who wants to hear that?

Dennis L. gave it a10:
This was a great game it changed how final fantasy were before this.

Best game ever! Amazing storyline that takes you into the game. In the time it was out (1997 ish) I give the game the following unbiased scores: Graphics:10/10. Superior, then. Gameplay:10/10. Detailed yet quick-to-learn combat system and almost total freedom. Sound:10/10. The best music I've EVER heard! Emotionally-charged to suit the atmosphere (personally, made me cry once). Lifespan:10/10. Depending on how quick you take playing RPGs, between 30 hours and 90 hours. However, to fully enjoy the game, will take roughly 75 hours. Massive. Biggest game ever, undebated. As for 2005, the game would score: Graphics:3/10. Nice cut-scenes but lack of detail, in particular with the characters. Gameplay:8/10. Very simple yet addictive battle system. Could be more detailed. Sound:8/10. Excellent sound quality to set the mood, but based entirely on midi tunes (needs modernising). Lifespan:10/10. Absolutely massive. Seriously. Therefore, to conclude, buy the game. Your life will be poorer without it. I realised that. I would have spent 3 times as much as they were selling it for if I knew what the game was like.

Chris F-T gave it a10:
Yes, this is the greatest RPG of all time. It took the concept of a fantasy world and brought the genre a true feeling of realism. The story is the most personally reflective of any RPG i've played, you learn more abou the central character than any other game i've played. The Weapons are truly difficult, and overall this game is challenging, engaging and overall the most flawless gaming experience i've ever been honored to have.

Like most of the reviewers I agree this is the best game ever, even though it has been out for over 8 years now. It is better than the real world. I can only say 1 thing and that is you MUST play this game. There is a massive gap between my next favourite game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and this thats how good FFVII is!! This is one perfect game that will last over 40 hours.

Never had a game been so long, yet so engaging, immersive and inspiring. This game changed the way I view videogames. Gone are the days when all I wanted was some fast paced action. This game thought me the art of storytelling is the best to ever happen to videogames. I never played an RPG before this game, now 90% of the games I play are RPG's. And everytime I play an RPG, I always find myself asking the same question: when will there be another final fantasy VII.

I had played several RPGs before this one, but this was the game that forever sold me to the RPG genre. I now view every other game through FF7-tinted glasses, and anything that's not an RPG just doesn't even come close. Sure there are plenty of crap RPGs out there as well as a few non-RPGs on par with FF7 in terms of gaming goodness (the more recent GTA installments as well as the Halo series come to mind). Still, FF7 is one of the few games to evoke true emotion in me. I cared about the characters. I wanted to find out more about them. I wanted them to succeed. I wanted to be there, traveling with them in their world. I wanted them to exist. This is one incredible game.

I have played every Final Fantasy in existence, and none captured my attention like FF7 with its story. This is the only game that deserves a perfect rating.

The most excellent game in the world today. That's it. Play this and you will be able to hang up your control pad and never play another game ever again. This is the most fufilling, superb and unbelievably excellent experience available on any console ever. And that is not an exaggeration.

This game is so amazing it raises the question: Are humans really capable of creating something so beautiful?

Without a doubt this is the greatest video game ever made. Ever. it stands above even the most modern games in every aspect of its form. Easy to learn systems coupled with constant strategic implications make this the most in-depth RPG ever created. The graphics, while now outdated, where the best that the PS1 ever saw. And then there is the story. This is the only game I have ever played that inspired deap emotions. I even cried at Aeris's death. Game manufactures have never created a masterpeice of this magnitde and never will again.

I don't like throwing out perfect scores to games that I think are simply "good." This along with a few other games truly deserves it. To me, Final Fantasy VII stands out as one of the most spectacular games in history. It combines a deep, brilliant plot with an inventive magic system, and tops that off with stunning graphics and one of the best sound tracks to date. The game lacks only in its sound and lack of difficulty, but as an adventure RPG, these elements are not so important. The minor flaws are compensated with everything else this game has to offer. From a story telling point of view, this plot surpasses most fiction novels in creativity, twists, and character development. The materia system offers so much for the player to experiement with. RPGs tend to only offer one or two plays through, but I've found myself going through this game for my 6th time. The only warning I need to offer is that it requires patience. Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt the most memorable game I have ever played and subsequently the most enjoyable game to this day.

There is nothing this game doesn't have. I could go on for 500 pages if I had the time. Final Fantasy is THE game. Yes, the greatest game of all time. If you haven't bought and cherished the months you spent captured in this game's perfection, why are you still reading this? Go out and buy it!

This is the greatest rpg ever made. i tip my hat to squaresoft they really outdone themselves. the storyline is awsome. the grafics arent the greatestbut the story line makes up for it. the marteria system is a lil hard to understand at first but once u get the hang of it ff8 and 9 cant compare. this is nothing short of the greatest game ever made.
