julia c gave it a2: Like Mr Mailer, I despise Hitler. His disdain shows clearly in The Castle In The Forest and that is its downfall. If you are interested in reading a plodding, fictionalized account of the banal sexual proclivities of Hitler's father, his incestuous relationships and descriptions of excrement and other base subjects, you will love this book. I didn't. I found this book boring, vulgar and lacking creative insight into the evil that became Adolf Hitler.
JimmyB gave it a5: I wanted to learn about Hitler's development, but the circuitousness of this novel left me feeling disappointed. It is my first reading of Mailer, and I wonder, how did he get away with it:?
Julie B gave it a5: Maybe I should wait until I have finished reading it before I vote (I am just over halfway through), but I am having trouble plodding through it. And I was so excited to read it before I started! So far, my opinion is this: an intriguing concept disappointingly executed. I expected better.
Susie B gave it a1: Dry, pompous, long and drawn out.
Ted B gave it a10: Mailer has been one of the boldest novelists of the last half century, and "The Castle in the Forest" is a fresh, pulverizing masterwork.
mike l gave it a10: This could be Mailer's masterpiece, the culmination of 60 years of narrrative experimentation.
Eric V gave it a7: This book needed to be written, but another viewpoint is overdue.
