I found this book disappointing after all the hype. Leaving aside the author's history; I was not engaged by the story at any stage - I found I didn't care what happened to any of the characters. Probably worth a read, but I'm not keeping it on my shelf.

As I put the puzzle pieces together, I was left with a strong desire to read the last parts of Suite Francaise, which were, of course, never written. Enough is there to create this haunting work. I highly recommend this book. Don't skip the appendix, with all footnotes.

Actually a 7.5. This book has been way overrated.

A good book certainly but I wouldn't rate it as highly as other reviewers on this site. I suspect it carries such a high vote by virtue of the context within which it has been published (handwritten manuscripts saved from being destroyed and the author dying in Auschwitz before publication). Well written, interesting and enjoyable - but not as powerful as suggested. Having said that it has encouraged me to seek out some non fiction books about the German occupation of France and the Vichy Government.

A Monet on pages! reading it part of the history that occurred here in france flowed through me! This has to be one of the most amazing and treasured books of my life! As for the review by the Guardian reviewer-compared to the world opinion- his comments are not only idiotic but an insult to the book , the author and his chosen profession!

I agree with those who say Suite Francaise is a masterpiece. It's beautiful, haunting, and elegiac. The only problem is that there isn't more. Once you read this book, you never forget it.

Dan Jacobson is way off beam. The two novellas are magnificent. Mais il faut absolument lire la version française si possible y compris la préface, l'annexe et les notes dans l'édition Denoël.

This is a masterpiece, pure and simple. If the author had lived long enough to finish it I'm sure it would have been compared to War and Peace.

Not quite finished. But this an extraordinary book. An amazing amount of distance captured while being in the middle. The book progresses with vignettes of unrelated people. The larger picture comes together in these small pieces. These are not heroid, big people. I'm fascinated by books that aren't finished (Dicken's Edwin Drood is another example). You are left hanging. This is a wonderful book on it's own. But the context provided by the author's life--and her death--provide an an unsettling frame for the story, for reading the book.

This remarkable book consists of two novellas of a projected five-book cycle which, unfortunately, the author was unable to complete: "Storm in June" (about the mass exodus from Paris in the wake of the German invasion of 1940), and "Dolce," which describes a French town in the occupied zone the following year; in the eye of the storm, as it were. The final section consists of two appendices (including the author's notes) and a series of letters. To those interested in a deeper understanding of the author, her plight, and her work, I would strongly recommend Jonathan Weiss's thoughtful and deeply-researched biography, "Irene Nemirovsky: Her Life and Works."

It s fantastic.

Scott S gave it a9:
A fine effort. The broad range of collaboration is thoroughly and artfully studied. The English translation is excellent.

This is a fine collection of interrelated stories of the first years of Nazi-occupied France, made poignant by an author who lived through the ordeal and was later victimized by it. The appendices and preface contributed much to my understanding of the author and her plight. A rich and satisfying read, but not quite a “10” for me. There were too many characters and vignettes for me to get absorbed in any one person or story.

Brian F gave it a10:
Excellent book, pleasing to read. Wish there was more.

Bev D gave it a10:
One of the best books I've ever read. My bet is that it will be an award winner.

The writing is beautiful. The power of the book outstanding. One can only wonder what Nemirovsky would have written had her life not ended so soon.
