The average user rating for this Book is 8.4 out of 10 (based on 35 Votes).
Lex H gave it an8: The honour is given to the Teacher and not for the ones who make the most money in education. Inspiring for teacher trainees.
Reynaldo P gave it a10: A classic! A hommage to teachers. From this moment all we will consider better the sacrified profession of teaching than the years before.
Elaine S gave it a10: A humorous, realistic look at the real art of teaching--no Hollywood romanticism! Every novice teacher should read this book; it contains valuable advice from the actual experience of a dedicated not found in the education curriculum in universities. This book validates the emotional roller coaster of all who love teaching.
ann d gave it a9: witty, true to the job, reflects true moments of the life of a teacher (teacher myself)
melitta k gave it a10: the best of his books, and I agree a must read for all Teachers
Brynna R gave it a7: This book is extremely enjoyable. It makes me want to read "'Tis" and "Angela's Ashes"!
John K gave it a10: As astruggling English teacher, I have never read anything so amusing, poetic and down to earth about the school jungle and sometimes paradise. Just as interesting are the negative begrudging remarks of some unhappy readers. Basically McCourt tells us all: get a life even if you are self-depricating
Mags M gave it a7: Some parts McCourt rambled on a liitle too long. Liked the 1st hand accounts of what it was like teaching for the Board of Ed of NY for 30 years.
megan w gave it an8: I loved it. Frank McCourt rocks.
Alice M gave it a9: He was undouibtedly an interesting and engaging teacher who held his students' attention: as a former teacher myself, I can't help but wonder how it must have been to teach next door to him on a particularly noisy, enthusiastic day!
Sherrie V gave it a7: There were many good observations about the role, respect, and challenges of teaching in McCourt's book. As a teacher, I relished his insights and hoped that non-teaching readers would come to understand this job a little better. I think I would have enjoyed being in his class (in fact, I had an English teacher much like him, I think), but I'm not sure the academics were of the caliber the kids deserved. I would not have chosen him to be my own kids' teacher. There are moments of brilliance and wonderful writing. Unfortunately, McCourt relied too heavily on those old stories we've already read. They seemed tired and distracting in this book.
Amy B gave it a4: Disconnected. Why did McCourt introduce all these characters, then drop them? And what... "I got married" on page 100, with no prior mention of her? No character development. WHY does everyone like this book???
Cheryl T gave it a10: I truly believe that this book describes what it is like to be a teacher and what a teacher must endure day after day. I like his honesty and that fact that he holds nothing back. I am a teacher and this story touched me and saddened me. It is too bad that America looks at its teachers the way they do. We have to get our Master's Degree and still we are not looked upon with respect. For those who say, Those who can't do teach, they should step into a classroom and see how fast they sink or swim. It is the most challenging and complex jobs in the world.
Lulu C. gave it a2: This is a lifeless, repetitious, and half-as--d work. Over 12,000 students and he could not get even one interested in improving his or her language skills? What a scary thought! But perhaps it is even scarier to read here about other teachers who wax nostalgic about identifying with his tedium
Bill D gave it a10: I am a retired high school sciene teacher. After reading " Teacher Man " I finally realize that I wasn't that bad a teacher. In fact it made me feel better about my teaching career.
Herbert Y gave it a5: The usual B.S. that will be lauded by the usual B.S.ers.
Joanne V gave it a10: I have listened to the unabridged CD twice and I laugh and cry at times. I taught for 25 years in LA and Salinas, CA and it brings up so many memories of good and bad days. I love this book and his honesty.
R Allenberg gave it a10: A quintessential book for all secondary teachers - being one I can say I had similar experiences and loved every second with his quirky humour and unique approach. Curriculum be damned!!! A must read for absolutely everyone!!!
Hal N gave it a9: Honest, self improving, a bit tawdy but honest. If you teach, you can relate.
andrea s gave it a10: mr mc c can do no wrong
stanley a gave it a10: As a teacher entering my 30th year of teaching in a public high school in Albany, New York, I can identify with many of the situations and predicaments mentioned in Frank's book. He has encouraged me to write about my experience, many of which are not believable but true.
Ginger R gave it a10: As a student working on a degree in secondary English education, I found Teacherman refreshing and enlightening. Having read and enjoyed Angela.s Ashes and Tis, I was not disappointed.
