The author's concise prose lends a Hemingway-esque hipness, but also leads to shallow characters, especially all of the women. Fair climax--a little predictable. The plot weaves between characters, only sometimes settling on the main character. Not much happens other than gunfights and brief sex scenes.

I can't believe that Metacritic twice posted the ranting and ravings of Prudence K who's favorite book is probably "The Cider House Rules". yea this book is not a happy one, but it is brilliant, amazing prose and a totally unique writing style. Not to mention his characters are totally complex and multi-layered. I have only read one other Elmore Leonard book but this one is more fully realized and I can honestly say one of the best books I've ever read. Please, listen to the critics, not Prudence K, and get this book.

I can only use one word to desribe this book... YUCK!

Prudence K gave it a0:
Okay. So, I'm one of those people who go to bookstores and just stand there are read the books without paying for it of having any interest in buying it at all. So, yeah. I read it again. Cried at the sad parts. And was asked to leave Barnes and Noble. I went back later. And got to finish it. I still hated it. But, it's like my drug! Terrible book. But, this might be the first book I actually buy!

Oh my God! This book was so sad. I cried. It was way ahead of it's time. It really was very odd. And I just didn't like it at all. I don't understand how it can possibly get 83/100! 0/10... easy.
